Maine Rally Comes Up Short Against Columbia

ORONO, Maine - The No. 24 University of Maine Black Bears gave up two quick goals in the first quarter to fall behind early, and couldn't come up with enough second half goals to make up the difference, falling to the Lions of Columbia University by a 3-2 final score.

Chloe Walton tallied the first Black Bears goal off an assist from Brianna Ricker, followed by Ricker tallying her fifth goal of the season midway through the third quarter to bring Maine back to just a 3-2 deficit. Kelsey Farkas' second goal of the day in the second quarter proved to be the game-winner, as Maine tallied four shots in the fourth quarter hunting for the equalizer, but couldn't convert any of their chances and fell by the 3-2 final count.

MAINE GAME NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS
  • Ricker's three point day brings her up to a team-high 11 on the season, the third highest individual total in the America East.
  • Mia Borley settled in nicely for the Black Bears following the two quick opening goals, throwing up another second half shutout and making eight total saves on the afternoon.
  • Shots on goal slanted heavily in the Lions' favor, as Columbia got 11 cracks at the Maine goal while the Black Bears totaled just five.
  • With the loss, Maine falls to 1-4 on the season, while the upstart Lions rise to 2-1 after knocking off back-to-back ranked opponents over this weekend in Orono.
UP NEXT
  • Maine will stay right here at home to host the squad from Northeastern on Friday at 3:00 PM, followed by a Sunday afternoon trip south to take on Harvard at 1:00 PM in Cambridge.
