Women's Soccer Wins 2019 Home Opener, 1-0

ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine women's soccer team won their home opener, 1-0, over the visiting Bryant Bulldogs.

First Goal (Maine 1-0): Emilie Andersen (Oppegaard, Norway) (34') was awarded a penalty kick after being taken down in the box. The senior found the back of the net with ease as she gave the Black Bears 1-0 lead that would last until halftime.

Kira Kutzinski (Bunde, Germany), making her season debut in net, turned away four Bulldog shots in the first 45 minutes.

With a one goal lead coming out of the 15 minute break, Maine did not relent. The 'Black Hole' defense allowed a total one shot on net in the second half. Olivia Chalifoux (Montrel, Quebec) played a beautiful ball over the middle to a streaking Nicole Bailey (Nepean, Ontario). The senior's redirect and the Black Bears' best second half scoring chance was saved by the Bryant goalkeeper.

The 1-0 lead held the entire game as Maine grabbed their first win of the 2019 season.

Shots/Keepers:
The Black Bears held a 9-to-5 advantage in shots on goal, while the corner kick battle was tied, 4-4.

Keeper Kutzinski made five saves in goal for UMaine, while her Bryant counterpart, Meghan Dalton, made nine.

Next: The Black Bears will travel to Jersey City, New Jersey, to take on Saint Peter's University this Wednesday, September 4. Kick-off is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
