NEW BRITAIN, Conn. -- The University of Maine women's soccer team was defeated by Central Connecticut State University, 2-1, with the help of a 67th minute goal.
First Goal (1-0 CCSU): Central Connecticut scored the first goal of the game in the 34th minute. Jenna Rae Covello found the back of the net with a header in the box.
Annalena Kriebisch narrowly missed making her second save of the first half.
The Blue Devils appeared to have scored a second goal. Listening to their goalkeeper, the Maine defense shifted ahead forcing Central Connecticut offside. CCSU took a 1-0 lead into the half.
Second Goal (1-1):
Anna-Maria Dagher (Bangor, Maine) tied the game only eight minutes into the second half.
Julia Mahoney (St. Augustin De Desmaures, Québec) played a perfect through ball to Dagher. The senior took one touch and beat the goalkeeper near side. The two teams were tied 53 minutes into the ballgame.
Third Goal (2-1 CCSU): Giavanna Inzerillo headed home Erica Bardes corner kick. The header came with 23 minutes left in the non-conference road contest.
Kriebisch kept the second half sheet clean for the Black Bears. Her save on a breakaway gave Maine one last chance to find that tying goal. Unable to break through the CCSU defense, the Black Bears dropped their first game of the 2019 season, 2-1.
Shots/Keepers:
The Blue Devils held a 6-to-3 advantage in shots on goal, while also winning the corner kick battle, 5-1.
Keeper Kriebisch made five saves in goal for UMaine, while her Central Connecticut counterpart, Amanda McQuillian, made two.
