PROVIDENCE, R.I. – In midweek non-conference action, the University of Maine baseball team belted 13 hits, taking down Brown 8-5 on Tuesday afternoon at Attanasio Family Field at Murray Stadium.
Eight Black Bears (10-26, 7-7 AE) registered a hit, while four players had at least two.
Danny Casals (3-for-5),
Colin Ridley and
Ryan Turenne all drove in two runs on the day, while
Hernen Sardinas and
Caleb Kerbs also sent a run across the plate for Maine.
Nicholas Sinacola got the start on the hill, striking out five in just three innings. He allowed three hits, including a solo home run.
Bobby Cliche would pitch the fourth and fifth innings, allowing two Bears to score on two hits and three walks in his first collegiate win.
Sam McCarthy would enter the game from the bullpen in the sixth, setting down the side in order. After suffering an apparent injury in the seventh,
Jacob Small took over for McCarthy, striking out two while walking one batter.
Dillon Stimpson would get the final out of the eighth, while
Trevor DeLaite slammed the door on Brown, picking up his third save of the season.
The Black Bears loaded the bases in the third inning, as Casals would send two home on a single to left field to lift the Black Bears to a 2-0 lead.
Brown (11-25) would cut the lead in half on a solo home run by Garett Delano in the Bears half of the third, and would grab a 3-2 lead in the fifth on a two-RBI double off the bat of Parke Phillips.
The Black Bears would string together back-to-back three-run innings in the sixth and seventh innings to take control of the ball game. Turenne would give the Black Bears back the lead on a two-RBI single to right field, which scored Ridley and Bramanti. Later in the inning, Sardinas would send home Kerbs on an infield single to second base as the Black Bears led Brown 5-3 after five.
McCarthy would set the side down in order in his first inning of work in the sixth, as Maine got the bats going for the second consecutive inning in the seventh. Pasic and Casals singled to begin the frame, as Bramanti would be hit by a pitch to load the bases. Ridley came up with a single to right center, which scored both Pasic and Casals. After Brown subbed in a new pitcher, Kerbs would drive in Maine's eighth run of the ball game on an infield single to shortstop, as Maine led 8-3 after 6 ½ innings.
Small's day would be done in the bottom of the eighth after hitting two batter's and walking another. Stimpson took over mound duties with the bases loaded, as Brown plates two runs on a double to left field. With the tying run coming to the plate, Stimpson would strikeout Delano, who had hit a home run earlier in the day.
DeLaite would retire the Bears with a flyout and back-to-back strikeouts, as he picked up his third save of the season.
Maine will head to Hanover, N.H. tomorrow to take on another Ivy League foe in Dartmouth. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Red Rolfe Field at Biondi Park
