Baseball Falls in Rubber Match to UAlbany

ALBANY, N.Y. – The day after Maine and UAlbany combined for 39 runs in a doubleheader, the University of Maine baseball team fell 12-3 to the Great Danes in the rubber match at Varsity Field.

Colin Ridley led the Black Bear offense on the day, going 2-for-4 from the plate with a double, while driving in two runs, while scoring the other run for Maine. Danny Casals and Caleb Kerbs tallied the other hits for the Black Bears (9-26, 7-7 AE). Jeffrey Omohundro drove in the third and final run for Maine in the seventh.

Peter Kemble (2-5) made the start in the series finale, allowing five earned runs, (one unearned), striking out two, while walking a pair in 3 and a 1/3 innings. Nick Sinacola would get the final two outs of the third, allowing a single in between outs. Justin Courtney entered the game in fifth frame, allowing four earned runs, while Dillon Stimpson pitched the sixth and seventh innings, giving up two earned runs to UAlbany. Matthew Pushard pitched the final frame for the Black Bears, registering his second final scoreless frame of the series.

It wouldn't take long for Maine to get on the scoreboard, as Colin Ridley would drive home Cody Pasic and Joe Bramanti, who both reached base on base on balls, as Maine took the first lead at 2-0.

Albany countered with four runs in the bottom of the third, as the Great Danes tallied three hits and took advantage of a Maine error.

With Albany up 4-2, the Great Danes added an RBI single, which would spell the end of Kemble's day. Sinacola entered the game with one out in the fourth and a runner on second, striking out the first batter he faced, but allowed an RBI single.

Albany's starting hurler, Ray Weber would retire 15 consecutive batters, until Danny Casals would earn a single to right field in the sixth inning.

The Great Danes would take control of the contest after scoring two runs in the fourth, four runs in the fifth and a single run in the sixth to take a 11-2 lead.

Weber departed the mound for UAlbany in the seventh, as Ridley and Kerbs led the inning off with a pair of singles. The Great Danes would get the next two Black Bear batters out, but Omohundro would reach base and advance to second on an error by the pitcher, as Ridley would score on the play to cut the deficit to 11-3.

Albany added its 12th run in the seventh to wrap up the scoring for both teams. Matthew Pushard would hold the Great Danes scoreless in the bottom of the eighth.

Kerbs walked with one out in the top of the ninth and advanced into scoring position on a passed ball, but a flyout and a strikeout would end the series finale.

Maine will head out of conference for two midweek games next week, traveling to Brown on Tuesday and Dartmouth on Wednesday. Tuesday's contest will begin at 3:30 p.m. in Providence, while Wednesday will feature a 3:00 p.m. first pitch in Hanover, N.H.
