Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Men's Hockey Battles at #2 UMass

AMHERST, Massachusetts -- The University of Maine men's ice hockey team was defeated by the #2 University of Massachusetts Minutemen, 6-0, on Saturday night inside the Mullins Center.

First Goal (UMass 1-0): Oliver Chau scored the first goal of the Hockey East match-up. On a two-on-one breakaway, Chau acted as though he was going to dish the puck off to his linemate. Instead, the forward kept the puck and found the back of the net giving his team an early 1-0 lead.

Second Goal (UMass 2-0): On another breakaway, UMass scored their second such goal of the first period. Maine turned the puck over at center ice. Mitchell Chaffee started the breakaway with Brady Keeper on his heels. With a delayed penalty called on Keeper, Chaffee played the put to a wide open Mario Ferraro who gave his team a 2-0 lead at the end of the opening 20 minutes.

Third Goal (UMass 3-0): With traffic in front of Jeremy Swayman, UMass scored their third goal of the night. Anthony Del Gaizo lifted a back handed shot over the Maine goaltender's shoulder. The Minutemen's lead ballooned to three with 14:48 left in the second period.

Fourth Goal (UMass 4-0): Ty Farmer scored seconds into a Maine penalty. Swayman made the initial save. The puck found its way through the pads and onto the goal line. Farmer crashed the net, tallied the goal, and gave his squad a 4-0 lead.

Fifth Goal (UMass 5-0): A turnover behind the Maine net led to the Minutemen's third goal of the second period. Cale Makar drew in the defense and waited patiently for Oliver Chau to crash the net. Once Chau crashed, Makar found the forward for his second goal of the night.

Sixth Goal (UMass 6-0): Jake Gaudet put his name on the score sheet when he tipped home a goal in the final minute of the second period. UMass went into the final intermission with a six goal lead.

The 6-0 score would stand as the University of Maine Black Bears (14-15-4) would fall to Hockey East rival, #2 UMass.

Notes:
  • Jeremy Swayman played the first two periods for the Black Bears and finished with 27 total saves. Rob McGovern went the rest of the way and tallied 12. Filip Lindberg stopped 16 Maine shots on the night.
  • The Black Bears went 0-2 on the power play, while UMass went 1-6.
  • Maine blocked three Minutemen shots on the night.

Next: The Black Bears will wrap up the 2018-19 regular season with a home game against Boston University. Puck drop for the March 9th game is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
