Softball Drops Final Game of Jayhawk Classic

LAWRENCE, Kansas - -  The University of Maine softball team was defeated by Southeast Missouri State University, 6-2, on the final day of the Jayhawk Invitational.

Mykaela Arellanes scored for the Redhawks in the top of third before Rachel Anderson lined a home run to to center field to increase the lead to 2-0. Emily Reid was given a boost when her catcher threw out Danina Marton at second base to end the inning.

To begin the 4th, SEMO State was able to get another run on the board in the form of a single from Arellanes to score Mackenzie Long from second base.

The Redhawks came out with a different approach in the 5th, laying down a bunt single from Messex to begin the inning. Ultimately ended up at 3rd after an error, Messex scored on the next pitch. SEMO State then capitalized with a 2-RBI single up the middle from Ashley Ellis, pushing the lead to 5-0.

Maine went to the bullpen, bringing in Gabbie Siciliano. She started her afternoon walking the first batter she faced, but then prevented a run from scoring by throwing out the runner at home on a comebacker to herself. Siciliano was then able to strike out the following batter, getting Maine out of the jam.

The Redhawks started the inning off with a single from Emert to start the inning off, and she ended up scoring to push the lead to 6-0.

Maine didn't go down without a fight though. Coming out in the bottom of the seventh, the Black Bears forced the bases loaded with a pair of walks from Clark and Findley and a single from Enos. Maine then scored their first run on an error off the ball in play from Kimble. Thogmartin then entered the game for the Redhawks. Amanda Nee lifted a sacrifice fly that scored Enos, but it was as close as Maine would get as they dropped their final game of the Jayhawk Invitational.
