CATONSVILLE, Md. – Led by three Black Bear double-figure scorers, the University of Maine women's basketball team overcame a subpar shooting performance to down UMBC, 58-45, on Saturday afternoon at the UMBC Events Center.
Despite the Retrievers (8-17, 1-9 AE) outshooting (42.5% to 35.2%) and outrebounding (36-25) the Black Bears (17-7, 10-1 AE) Maine scored 24 points off of UMBC's 29 turnovers and converted 15-of-21 from the free throw line to earn its 10
th America East victory of the season. Maine has now won six-consecutive games and earned five-straight victories against UMBC.
Blanca Millan tallied a game-high 14 points and grabbed four rebounds, with 12 of her points coming in the second half alone.
Parise Rossignol recorded 12 points, while
Fanny Wadling filled the stat sheet with 11 points, seven rebounds, five assists, two steals, a block and zero turnovers in 36 minutes of play. When Wadling was on the court, Maine outscored UMBC by an impressive 25 points.
Maine started the contest strong, slowly building a 14-2 advantage over UMBC, over the course of seven minutes and 47 seconds. The Retriever's cut the deficit to just six points after a quick 6-0 sprint, as Maine closed the quarter with a seven-point lead at 17-10 after
Dor Saar sunk her second 3-pointer and UMBC added a late layup to end the frame.
The Black Bears extended its advantage to nine twice in the second frame at 19-10 and 22-13, but the Retrievers held Maine to just three field goals in the quarter. UMBC outscored Maine 12-9 in second quarter, as Maine led by four at 26-22, heading into the locker room. Saar twisted her ankle in the quarter and did not return.
After the halftime break, the two squads traded points the entire quarter, with Maine's lead never going below five and extending more than nine, as the Black Bears went into the final frame with a seven-point lead at 40-33. Millan scored eight of Maine's 14 points in the quarter, converting 4-of-8 shots from the field.
A 5-2 run by the Black Bears to start the final quarter on a Wadling layup and a Rossignol triple gave Maine a 10-point advantage at 45-35. UMBC's Janee'a Summers responded by scoring four-straight on a layup and two made free throws to cut the Black Bears' advantage to just six at 45-39. The Retrievers would be held scoreless the next 3:11 of game time, as Millan and Rossignol both sunk jumpers and
Maddy McVicar drained two from the charity-stripe, as the Black Bears led 51-39 with 6:26 to go.
The Black Bears would be held without a field goal over the final 6:26 of the contest, but Maine sealed the game by going 7-of-8 from the line over the final 2:31, finishing the game on a 13-6 sprint to earn the 58-45 victory.
Summers and Te'yJah Oliver led the Retrievers with 10 points apiece.
