Baseball Drops Season-Opener at Florida State

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The University of Maine baseball team opened its 2019 season on Friday, falling to No. 6 Florida State, 11-0, at Mike Martin Field at Dick Houser Stadium.

Florida State jumped to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, adding on two runs in both the second and fourth innings. The Seminoles (1-0) went on to score a single run in the fifth and registered three runs in the sixth inning.

Golden Spikes Watch List selection and preseason all-american Drew Parrish (1-0) of Florida State struck out five for the Seminoles and allowed just one base runner on a walk in five innings on the mound. Conor Grady pitched the next three innings and Chase Haney closed out the ninth, allowing a base runner each on walks.

Junior RHP Cody Laweryson (0-1) started on the mound for the Black Bears (0-1) in his sixth career start. The Bingham, Maine native pitched three innings, allowing four-earned runs (five total), while striking out two and allowing four hits.

Freshman RHP Jacob Small made his collegiate debut in relief of Laweryson, pitching the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. He struck out the first batter he faced, but allowed the remaining seven runs in contest, six of them earned. He gave up a total of seven hits, striking out two Seminoles.

Junior LHP Trevor DeLaite hit the first batter he faced in the seventh inning, but rallied to retire the remaining three batters in the frame. 2018 America East All-Rookie team selection Matt Geoffrion loaded the bases in the bottom of the eight, but struck out two consecutive batters and forced a fielder's choice to exit the inning unscathed.

The Black Bears could not get a runner on base until the fifth inning, as junior catcher Cody Pasic drew a walk. Maine could not capitalize, ending the inning with Pasic on first.

The following inning Grady came in relief for Parrish for FSU. Kevin Doody earned a two-out walk in hopes of sparking a Maine rally, but a ground-out thwarted the Black Bears' opportunity.

The Seminole offense scored three runs in the bottom sixth inning to make it 11-0. The Black Bears could not respond in their half of seventh or eighth innings, going down in order.

After Geoffrion got out of a bases loaded jam, Doody earned his second walk of the contest, advancing to second and then taking third on a wild pitch in Maine's best opportunity to score on the night. With one out in the inning, a fly-out to center was not deep enough to bring Doody in, as the Black Bears were down to their final out. Maine struck out swinging in the next at-bat, bringing their season-opener of their 136th season to an end.

Maine and Florida State will play in game two and game three of the four-game series tomorrow in a double-header at Mike Martin Field at Dick Houser Stadium. All four games of the series will be broadcasted live on the ACC Digital Network. Fans can listen to Jim Churchill call the remaining four games locally on 102.9 WCYR, with an audio stream available on goblackbears.com. The teams close out the series on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
