Black Bears Fall at Home to Northeastern

McVicar leads Maine with 16 points

Bangor, Maine -- Maddy McVicar's 16 points led three Black Bears in double-figures but it wouldn't be enough as the Black Bears were tripped up at home, falling 66-58 to Northeastern on Saturday afternoon.

McVicar finished the afternoon with a career-high four triples, going 4-for-6 from beyond the arc and 6-of-8 overall from the floor. Anne Simon, who has now tallied double-figure scoring efforts in four of Maine's last five games, registered 14 points with four assists while Maeve Carroll nearly turned in her second double-double of the season after turning in 11 points and nine boards.

Dor Saar also filled the stat sheet with eight points, seven assist and five rebounds while Gadson Lefft, making her first appearance for the Black Bears, added seven points and four boards in 14 minutes of action.

The turnovers proved to be the difference as the Black Bears suffered 24 turnovers to Northeastern's 14 mishaps. The Huskies also controlled offensive action in the paint, outscoring Maine 44-24 down low. Northeastern, led by Alexis Hills' 24 points, recorded 18 steals in the contest.

Overall, Maine was 21-of-53 from the floor, including an 8-for-24 showing from beyond the arc, while cashing in on eight of 10 free throw attempts.

After carrying a 33-29 lead into the break, Maine was outscored 20-13 in the third quarter and 47-25 in the second half as the Huskies were able to distance themselves over the game's final 20-minutes.

Maine fell behind by six midway through the first before answering with a 10-3 run. Simon, who registered eight of her 14 points in the first quarter, completed the old fashioned three point play with a bucket while drawing a foul to start the run. Saar's triple knotted the score at 12-12. Northeastern regained the lead with a free throw before Simon's bucket in the paint completed the run to giving Maine a 14-13 advantage.

The Black Bears extended the lead to a pair before Northeastern's bucket with 30-seconds left in the period sent the game into the second tied at 15-all.

Back-to-back triples from Saar and McVicar began the second for Maine as the Black Bears took their largest lead of the game, 21-15, with just 1:05 gone in the quarter.

Northeastern responded with a 10-0 run to nab a four point edge midway through the period.

Maine would again answer, this time putting together a 6-0 sprint capped on another trey by McVicar to put the Black Bears back on top, 29-25.

The Black Bears would lead 33-29 at the break after shooting 7-of-14 in the second period.

A 5-0 run from Northeastern started the third as the Huskies would claw their way into it. With Maine leading by one with 1:47 left in the third, Northeastern put together a 7-0 run to lead 49-43 late in the period. Simons' triple at the buzzer cut the lead to three entering the final quarter.

The Huskies began the fourth much like they did the third, elevating their lead to nine on a 6-0 run.

Maine chipped the lead down to five on a pair of Lefft free throws but Northeastern answered, snatching its largest lead of the day after a 6-0 run put it up by 11 with 3:30 to play.

The Black Bears continued to fight. A triple from Simon preceded a layup from Abbe Laurence as Maine cut its way back to within six.

However, it would be as close as Maine could get, falling in the end by a 66-58 final.

Maine returns to action on Dec. 30 when it travels to meet Drexel at 4:30 p.m.
