Men's Hockey Falls in Second Night in Lowell, 3-2

LOWELL, Massachusetts -- The University of Maine men's ice hockey team was defeated by #14 UMass Lowell, 3-2, on Saturday night in the Tsongas Center.

First Goal (Maine 1-0): The Black Bears scored the only goal of the first period. JD Greenway fired a puck on net from the blue line. Tyler Wall made the save but left a rebound for Jacob Schmidt-Svejstrup. The sophomore corralled the loose puck and gave his squad a very early 1-0 lead. Cameron Spicer was also credited with an assist on the play.

Second Goal (#14 UMass Lowell 1-1): Carl Berglund tied the Hockey East contest only 2:03 into the second period. The River Hawks' forward found a seam in the Black Bears' and wired a wrist shot into the back of the net.

Third Goal (#14 UMass Lowell 2-1): After a flurry of shots on Jeremy Swayman, Anthony Baxter was given a shot at an open Maine net. The River Hawks second goal of the period came just over four minutes later.

Fourth Goal (2-2): Mitchell Fossier and Tim Doherty combined for Maine's second goal of the evening. Doherty found a streaking Fossier, who did the rest. The Black Bears' captain went bar, down and tied the game at two goals apiece.

Fifth Goal (#14 UMass Lowell 3-2): 1:13 later, the River Hawks took the lead back. Matt Brown scored from an impossible angle. The tally gave UMass Lowell a one goal advantage with 16:00 left in the game.

Despite pulling Swayman for the final 1:08 and being on the power play for 00:20, the Black Bears were unable to find a game tying goal. The loss drops Maine to 5-3-2, 2-2-2 on the 2019-20 season.

Notes: Jeremy Swayman finished with 27 saves, while Tyler Wall tallied 38 for UMass Lowell.

Maine went 0-4 on the power play, as the River Hawks were 0-2 on their man advantages.

The Black Bears blocked 10 shots as a team.

Next: Maine will return to the ice next Friday, November 15th when the next chapter of the Border Battle is written. Puck drop for the Hockey East Friday night match-up with UNH is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
