BANGOR, Maine - The Maine men's basketball team finished up preseason play on Sunday afternoon, defeating McGill University by a 70-63 final score.
Maine opened the action with a 6-0 run led by
Sergio El Darwich and
Andrew Fleming, before the visitors responded with a 5-0 run of their own to tighten things back up. The Redmen would control the pace for much of the first portion of the first half, building up to a seven-point lead midway through. An 8-0 run would give Maine back the lead with 6:17 remaining, but McGill closed the half strong with a quick 5-0 run that sent the game into the half with just a 41-34 Maine advantage.
Neither team could put together a significant run in either direction, as both squads shot under 41% in the second half. In the end, both teams put up 29 points in the period as Maine finished off the 70-63 exhibition victory.
Senior
Andrew Fleming ran the show once again, posting 22 points, nine rebounds, five assists, and four blocks in 37 minutes. His co-captain
Sergio El Darwich flirted with a double-double via 13 points and eight rebounds alongside three steals. A 66.7% mark from the field in the first half buoyed Maine's game total up to 53.7%, but the Black Bears shot just 22.7% from three on the day.
Maine will prepare for their regular-season opener this Wednesday when they take on Merrimack College at 7:00 PM at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.
