BANGOR, Maine --
Dor Saar registered a game-high, and career-high, 21 point scoring effort but UMaine was unable to conquer Boston University, falling to the Terriers 62-49 in the home opener for the Black Bears on Sunday afternoon.
Saar finished the contest 7-for-14, including a career-best six 3-point field goals, to go along with four assists with just one turnover in over 37 minutes of gameplay.
Blanca Millan added 10 points in limited action. Millan suffered a cut over her left eye just 49-seconds into the first quarter and did not return until there was 1:09 remaining in the third.
Maine shot 17-of-49 from the field, 9-for-22 from 3-point range, and was able to knock down six of 11 free throw chances.
Much of Boston University's offense came from inside as it outscored Maine 28-16 in the paint and turned in a 35-20 advantage on the boards. The Terriers were also successful from the charity stripe, going 17-for-21 day from the free throw line. Maine native Nia Irving led the Terriers with 20 points and nine rebounds.
The Black Bears, who never led in the contest, fell in a six point hole later in the first. Boston University would snag a five point edge before Saar's second consecutive triple cut the lead to a pair. The Terriers answered with a 4-0 run to take its largest lead of the first quarter, 14-8.
The Terriers' lead moved to seven early in the second before Maine answered with a 6-0 run. Another triple from Saar, her fourth of the first half, trimmed the deficit to four before
Anna Kahelin's first trey in a Maine uniform brought Maine to within one.
Boston University closed out the first half with a 6-1 run, entering the break with a 24-18 advantage.
The Terriers came out of the half on fire, racing out to a 15-point advantage after beginning the third quarter on an 11-2 run. Leading by 15 midway through the third, Maine put an end to the run with consecutive triples by Saar and
Anne Simon, bringing Maine back within nine.
However, Boston University ran its advantage back out to 15 after closing the third period on a 7-0 run.
Maine was unable to trim the lead under double-digits in the fourth. Boston University took its largest lead, 57-40, with 3:12 remaining, and was able to hold on for a 62-49 non-conference road victory.
