Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Outlasted by UMass Lowell, 2-1

ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine women's soccer team was defeated by the UMass Lowell River Hawks, 2-1, on Thursday evening at the Mahaney Diamond.

First Goal (UMass Lowell 1-0): The UMass Lowell River Hawks struck first in the chilly conference match-up. Kristin Birgisdottir played a ball through the middle of the Maine defense. Karah Fleet was waiting patiently on the other end of the through ball. The sophomore took one touch and found the back of the net. UMass Lowell held a 1-0 lead early in the first half.

Second Goal (UMass Lowell 2-0): Hailey DuBose won a foot race with Emma Cossette to eventually earn one-on-goalkeeper chance. Emily Nelson set up the DuBose fastbreak. Kira Kutzinkski made a great attempt but was unable to stop the River Hawks' second goal of the evening.

Third Goal (UMass Lowell 2-1): Gaby Panagakos scored from almost midfield. The senior launched a ball, hoping for a deflection. Instead of deflecting off of another player, the ball took one bounce and flew over the goalkeeper's head. Maine trailed 2-1 with 25 minutes left in the conference match-up.

Despite the Black Bears' best attempt, they were unable to find the game timing goal in the final minutes of the contest. UMass Lowell held onto their 2-1 lead for their first conference win of the 2019 season.

Shots/Keepers: UMass Lowell held a 7-to-6 in shots on goal, while the corner kick battle was tied, 5-5.

Keeper Kira Kutzinski made five saves in goal, as her River Hawk counterpart, Annerens Tijm, tallied five.

Next: The Black Bears will travel to West Hartford, Connecticut on Sunday, October 6 to take on the Hartford Hawks. Kick-off is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
