First Year Players Lead Women's Ice Hockey to Exhibition Victory

ORONO, Maine—The Maine women's ice hockey team earned a commanding 7-0 victory in an exhibition against the University of New Brunswick Friday, led in great part by first year players.

The Black Bears kicked off the scoring three minutes into the game with freshman Ida Press rifled a shot from the nearside boards through traffic in front of the net.

Liga Miljone potted a rebound off of a strong end-to-end rush to give the Black Bears the third goal of the period.

The freshmen were complemented with goals from seniors Alyson Matteau, with a whistling power play goal, and Cailey Hutchison capitalized on a rebound as it faded to the corner.

Celine Tedenby scored her first of two goals of the night in the second period unassisted after she carried the puck after a takeaway at the blue line to rush in and finish in close. Her second came on the power play midway through the third.

Ally Johnson was the fifth of six new members of the squad to tally on the night with her unassisted shot after she picked the puck from the corner and walked it along the goal line and threw it in five hole.

Not to be outdone, Ali Beltz assisted on three goals in a game the Black Bears offense posted 45 shots on goal.

All three Black Bear goaltenders combined to post the shutout, as Carly Jackson took the first, Jillian Flynn the second and Loryn Porter the third.

The Black Bears enter regular season on the road as they head to Quinnipiac Oct. 5 and 6.
