No. 18 Field Hockey Cruises Past Northeastern for Eighth Straight Win

Black Bears return home Sunday to host No. 20 Harvard

DEDHAM, Mass. -- The No. 18 University of Maine field hockey team tallied seven second half goals to helped guide it to a 9-1 victory at Northeastern on Friday afternoon. The victory moved the Black Bears to 8-0 on the season, tying their best start in program history.

Libby Riedl tallied her 99th career point in the win, notching a hat-trick and adding an assist to lead the Black Bears. Casey Crowley tallied a pair of goals in the win while four other Black Bears found the back of the cage in the victory.

Maine goalkeeper Mia Borley made one first-half save and faced no shots in the second to earn her eighth-consecutive win.

MAINE GAME NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:
  • The Black Bears out-shot Northeastern 16-2, including a 10-0 second half margin.
  • Maine held an 8-4 advantage over the Huskies in penalty corners.
  • The win moves Maine to 10-24-1 against Northeastern and marks the Black Bears' sixth-straight victory over the Huskies in the all-time series.
  • Riedl now stands just one point away from 100 for her career. The senior has tallied 13 points over her last three games.
  • Maine has now out-scored the opposition by a mark of 42-8 on the season. 
  • The Black Bears have scored at least five goals in four consecutive contests.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • 6:35 | Emily Hindle emerged out of a scrum in front and was somehow able to thread the ball through the crowd and into the back of the cage for her fourth goal of the season.
  • 16:58 | Hana Davis sent a pass across the middle, finding Ella Mosky who put the Black Bears up, 2-0.
  • 26:40 | Camille O'Conor cut the Black Bears' lead in half with her fourth of the year.
  • 38:14 | Riedl began the second half scoring as she took a pass and dribbled in for her seventh goal of the season.
  • 41:45 | Crowley tallied her first of two back-to-back goals, taking a pass from Brittany Smith through the circle before capitalizing on the goal.
  • 49:42 | Crowley cut a pass to herself and scored, putting Maine on top 4-1.
  • 51:20 | Riedl tallied her second of the game as Samantha Wagg set the senior up for Maine's fifth goal of the contest.
  • 52:49 | Lydia Gavner scored Maine's fourth goal in a five-minute span as she was able to punch the ball into the cage while falling.
  • 54:32 | Riedl sent a pass ahead to Nina Keur who found herself one-on-one with the Northeastern keeper. Keur won the battle to put Maine up, 8-1.
  • 61:15 | Riedl completed her hat-trick with her 99th career point after taking a pass from Cassandra Mascarenhas and depositing it into the back of the cage.
UP NEXT:
The Black Bears return home to take on No. 20 Harvard on Sunday, Sept. 23 at 1 p.m as Maine looks to improve to 3-0 on the season against ranked teams. UMaine students that attend the game against Harvard can pick up a Black Bear blanket by showing their student ID at the marketing table in front of the bleachers. For those unable to attend Sunday's contest, the game will be carried on ESPN+.
