No. 18 Maine Blanks Cornell to Open Catamount Classic

Maine out-shot Cornell 24-3.

BURLINGTON, Vt. – In the first game of the weekend of the Catamount Classic, the No. 18 Maine Black Bears field hockey team out-shot Cornell 24-3 to win 5-0 on Friday afternoon on Moulton-Winder Field.
 
The Black Bears (6-0) dominated possession to only allow three Big Red (1-4) shots the entire game. Maine's balanced offense continued to shine as Riley Field, Hana Davis, Casey Crowley, Lydia Gavner, and Nina Keur all netted a goal in the victory. Libby Riedl, Brittany Smith, Keur, and Brianna Ricker were all credited with assists.

Freshman goalkeeper Mia Borley (6-0) picked up her first career shutout in the victory, stopping all three shots she faced. Cornell's Maddie Henry made eight stops, but allowed five goals in the loss for the Big Red (1-4).
 
MAINE GAME NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Black Bears earned 13 penalty corners, while limiting Cornell to just two.
  • Maine's 6-0 start to the 2018 season is the program's best start to a season since the Black Bears went 8-0 to start the 1975 season.
  • In the past three games, the Black Bears have scored 13 goals, coming from 11 different players
  • Today's game marked the second game in a row and the third game this season where Maine scored 5 or more goals in a single game.
  • The Black Bears have outshot the opposition by a mark of 114 to 36 in 2018, which has led to Maine outscoring teams by a mark of 26-6 through six games.  
  • The shutout was Maine's first since Emma Cochran shutout Vermont 1-0 in Burlington on Oct. 27, 2017.
  • The victory snapped a three-game losing streak to Cornell, as Maine picked up its first victory since defeating the Big Red 2-0 at the Catamount Classic in 2011.    
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • 4:11 | The Black Bears got on the scoreboard when Field tapped in a shot from Davis into an open net.
  • 14:06 | Maine added a score in less than 10 minutes, when Keur fired a shot on a pass from Riedl, which bounced past the goalkeeper and into the left side of the net.
  • 33:21 | As the end of the first half neared, Maine capitalized on a penalty corner as Smith fired a shot that was blocked, and Davis deposited the rebound with a high shot past the diving goalkeeper.
  • 58:42 | Maine added to its' lead in the second half when Riedl stole possession from Cornell and immediately passed to Ricker, who dangled the ball through a defender's leg and setup Gavner with a beautiful pass for the score.
  • 68:05 | The Black Bears added a score late when Keur setup with Crowley with a pass, as the senior launched a shot past the approaching goalkeeper to the left side of the net.
