BURLINGTON, Vermont - The University of Maine women's soccer team tied Marist College, 1-1, after two overtimes in a neutral site match-up at the University of Vermont on Friday afternoon.
Marist broke the scoreless tie 10 minutes into the non-conference game. Annalena Kriebisch denied a pointblank chance from Nicole Sasso, but the rebound deflected to the unmarked Sasso. She would find the back of the net on her second chance. The Red Foxes held an early 1-0 lead.
Kriebisch on two separate occasions, made two tremendous saves for the Black Bears. Along with the play of the UMaine goalkeeper, the defense kept the score 1-0 for the rest of the half.
Beate Naglestad saw her two first half corner kick chances saved by the stifling Marist defense.
The Black Bears evened the score with 33:27 to go in the second half. Nicole Bailey received a through ball in the box from Priscilla Domingo. Bailey used one touch to beat the Red Foxes' goalkeeper, Francesca Guzzo. Bailey's goal was the first of the 2018 campaign for UMaine. The 1-1 tie would hold until the end of regulation.
Neither team would be able to find the back of the net in the first or second overtime. Both squads had chances to score on corner kicks and breakaways. Fatigue and substitutions played a vital role in the two extra frames. Kriebisch and Guzzo kept a clean card for their sides, ending the game in a 1-1 tie.
