BURLINGTON, Vermont - A late overtime goal from Saint Mary's was the difference maker in the Black Bear's second game of the TD Bank Classic, as the Gaels handed UMaine a 2-1 loss on Sunday afternoon at the University of Vermont.
The first 30 minutes of the game was mostly played between the 18 yard markers. Neither side was able to grab control of the action, until the Black Bears (0-2-1) found the back of the net for the loan first half goal.
Hannah Bamford made her original defender miss and started towards the net. Priscilla Domingo took her cue from H. Bamford and also started sprinted through the St. Mary defense. H. Bamford saw that Domingo was unmarked and feed her a beautiful through ball. The wide open Domingo only needed one touch to beat the Gael's (2-2) goalkeeper and give her squad a 1-0 lead they would hold for the final 13:11 of the half.
The Gaels wasted little time in the second half and evened the score. Awarded an indirect kick by the officials, Jaylen Crim played a ball into the middle of the box that Jordyn Cunningham headed in the upper 90. With 35:56 to go in the second half, the game was tied 1-1.
The final 30 minutes of the second half were almost identical to the opening 30 minutes of the game. Both defenses played perfectly. The two soccer clubs would end the game tied and head to overtime. For the second consecutive game, the Black Bears would be required to play at least one extra frame.
With 1:22 left in the first overtime period, Jaylen Crim snuck one by Annalena Kriebisch. The goaltender had played a nearly flawless extra frame until the St. Mary's forward found a small opening in the UMaine defense. The Gaels knocked-off the Black Bears, 2-1.
