Softball Splits Doubleheader at Stony Brook

Regular season finale between the two teams on Saturday at 11 a.m.

STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- The University of Maine softball team earned a split of Friday's doubleheader in Stony Brook. The Black Bears dropped game one, 7-1, before rallying to capture game two, 4-1.

Rachel Carlson led the Black Bears as the senior tallied three hits and scored a run. Erika Leonard chipped in two hits, drove in a pair, and scored a run of her own.

In game one, the Black Bears fell into a 3-0 hole after Stony Brook plated single runs in each of the first three innings, ultimately falling by a 7-1 final.

Carlson, Alyssa Derrick and Maddie Decker each tallied a hit for the Black Bears. Decker drove in Leonard for Maine's lone run of game one.

Melissa Rahrich picked up the win for Stony Brook, going the distance to earn her 12th win of the season. Rahrich gave up one run on three hits with six strikeouts and no walks.

Annie Kennedy fell to 9-7 with the loss after giving up six runs, five earned, on eight hits with two strikeouts and no walks over 4.0 innings.

Rahrich scored the first run of the game on Irene Rivera's RBI double in the first inning.

Stony Brook tacked on single runs in the second and third inning before extending its lead to 6-0 with a three-run bottom of the fourth.

Singles by Hering and Rahrich set the table for Rivera who homered over the wall in right center.

The Black Bears were able to get on the board in the top of the sixth. Leonard reached after being hit by a pitch and advanced to second on Carlson's bunt single. With two outs in the frame, Decker roped a single to the gap in right center, bringing in Leonard with Maine's first run.

However, Stony Brook would add another run in the bottom of the sixth and close out the Black Bears for a 7-1 victory.

--

In game two, the Black Bears used a four run top of the fifth to help propel them to a 4-1 victory.

Leonard tallied two hits, included a two-RBI triple, while Carlson added a pair of hits while scoring a run.

Freshman Kyleigh O'Donnell went the distance to earn the win, picking up her sixth win of the season. O'Donnell gave up just one run while scattering five hits to go along with four strikeouts.

Stony Brook began the scoring as it was able to plate a run in the top of the first. Rahrich worked a leadoff walk before advancing to third on Corr's single. Rahrich would later come in to score on a wild pitch.

The Seawolves would hang on to their one run lead until the Black Bears broke through for four runs in the fifth.

Niland started the rally with a single up the middle before being lifted in favor of pinch runner, Sarah Coyne. Coyne advanced to second on a groundout before Amanda Nee worked a walk. Nee was replaced on the base paths by Shanna Scribner before Carlson reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Laurine German's single through the right side brought in Coyne, tying the game at one. Scribner was erased on the play trying to score from second. Carlson gave the Black Bears the lead when she scored on a wild pitch. Derrick followed with another walk before Leonard's opposite field RBI triple to right scored German and Derrick. The Black Bears would lead, 4-1, after five.

O'Donnell and the defense would shut down the Stony Brook offense the rest of the way as the Black Bears earned a doubleheader split with a 4-1 victory in game two.

The two teams meet on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. in the regular season finale.
