BC Tops Baseball In Weather Shortened Non-Conference Contest

BRIGHTON, Mass. – In a seesaw, weather shortened affair on Tuesday afternoon at the Harrington Athletics Village, Boston College edged the University of Maine baseball team, 9-7, The non-conference contest was called with two outs in the bottom of the eighth due to lightning.

Danny Casals finished with three hits, including two home runs, while knocking in three runs and scoring three runs. Jeremy Pena and Christopher Bec each had two hits for the Black Bears while Ben Terwilliger collected two RBIs on his first collegiate home run.

Casals is the first Maine player with at least 13 home runs in a season since Jon Hambelton did the same in the 2001 season. Pena extended his hitting streak to a season-long 10 games while Kevin Doody extended his to eight.

Thanks to Pena's leadoff single and Bec's 26th RBI of the season, Maine held a 1-0 lead after one half inning but the game turned into a seesaw affair. For every run Maine scored, BC seemed to have an answer and vice versa.

In the bottom half of the inning, BC's leadoff batter earned a walk and was able to score four batters later on a single to left field. Then, it was Casals' 12th home run of the season – a two-run shot to left field – that gave Maine a 3-1 lead in the top of the third. The Eagles, though, showed patience at the plate in earning three walks in the bottom of the third. A single and a sacrifice fly pushed two of those walks across to tie it at 3-3.

When the Eagles took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth, Maine took its turn in showing its ability to answer back. Casals started the inning with a single, stole second and then scored on a throwing error to even up the score for the third time in the game.

After BC took a 5-4 edge in the fifth, it took Maine until the top of the seventh to answer, when Terwilliger went the opposite way with a two-run shot over the left field fence, to give Maine a 6-5 lead.

A fourth lead change in the form of a two-run double from Gian Martellni saw BC take a 7-6 edge but Casals didn't allow it to stick. With one out in the top of the eighth, Casals went yard for the second time on the day to even it up once again.

But with the fifth and final lead change of the game, the Eagles made it 9-7 in the home half of the eighth. After loading the bases, BC used a hit by pitch and a wild pitch to seal the game.

Both teams move to 17-30 on the year with the results of the contest. Maine smacked 11 hits to BC's nine but the Black Bears.

The Black Bears close out the regular season this weekend when Hartford visits Mahaney Diamond for a three-game series Friday and Saturday.
