DURHAM, N.H. – In its first action since March 17
th, the UMaine men's track and field team earned second-place against Holy Cross, UMass Lowell, Colby and meet hosts UNH on Saturday afternoon at Reggie Atkins Track and Field Facility. Maine totaled 168 points on the day.
The Black Bears won four events on the day, including two from
Benjamin Davis. Davis won the 100m (10.85) and 200m (22.36) to earn a total of 18 points on the day for Maine. Both individual runs were personal bests for the senior.
Mozai Nelson followed Davis with a second-place finish in the 200m (22.37), along with placing third in the 100m (10.99). Both of Davis's and Nelson's times in the 100m met IC4A qualifying standards.
The 800m saw Maine grab four of the top eight finishes, led by a first-place finish from
Jacob Johns (1:57.70) and a runner-up performance from
John Hassett (1:58.58).
Ethan Orach crossed the finish line in fourth with a time of 1:59.31, while
Cooper Nelson followed in eight (2:03.63).
Other top performances on the track included
Aaron Willingham, (4:05.38)
Jacob Johns, (4:10.25) and
John Hassett (4:11.21) earning second through fourth place finishes in the 1500m.
Elijah Yeboah finished third in the 400m hurdles (58.76) and
Branden Kuusela (59.05) followed directly behind him in a fourth place.
Both of Maine's relay teams both took second place, with the Black Bear squad of Davis, Nelson,
Seth White, and
Andrew Smith recorded a time of 42.89 in the 4x100 relay. In the 4x400m relay, Maine's team of Nelson,
Andrew Clement,
Elijah Yeboah and
Isaac Yeboah registered a time of 3:29.59 for the other runner-up performance.
In the field events,
Elijah White put together a top-10 school performance in the triple jump (14.17m) to earn the Black Bears their lone first-place finish. White also took second in the long jump on the day (6.92m).
Alecsander Wortman's mark of 4.56m in the pole vault was second-best among the six competitors. Also earning a second-place finish was
Isaiah Allen in the javelin (49.23m).
Following Allen in the javelin was
Jacob Bossi, whose top-throw of 46.06m was good enough for third place. In the triple jump,
James Benson took third with a jump of 12.53m.
Meet host New Hampshire won the event with 212 points. Colby took third with 125, while Holy Cross earned 70 points for fourth. UMass Lowell finished with 19 points for fifth place.
Both the men's and women's teams are back in action next Saturday, as both squads head back to UNH to compete in the Wildcat Invitational.
