Pair of Walk-Offs Lift Softball Over Sacred Heart

Black Bear pitching shuts out Sacred Heart over 16 innings

ORONO, Maine -- Alyssa Derrick's walk-off home run in game one gave the Black Bears a 2-0 victory over Sacred Heart before Shanna Scribner was able to score on a throwing error in the eighth inning of game two to give Maine a 1-0 victory as the University of Maine softball team swept a doubleheader from visiting Sacred Heart on Saturday afternoon.

Starting pitchers Annie Kennedy and Kyleigh O'Donnell each picked up a win as the duo combined to toss 16.0 innings of shutout ball, together allowing just five hits and each striking out eight.

Erika Leonard, Amanda Nee, Meghan Royle and Derrick each tallied single hits for the Black Bears.

The Black Bears were patient at the plate in game one, working 11 walks, but were unable to find the scoreboard. Neither team was able to muster any consistent offense as the game would move into the eighth, deadlocked in a scoreless tie.

In the bottom of the eighth, Leonard worked a leadoff walk. In stepped Derrick who shot her fifth home run of the season the opposite way, clearing the right field fence to give the Black Bears a 2-0 victory.

In game two, the offense on both sides of the ball was again kept in check as both team's managed to tally just two hits each.

The Black Bears rallied in the bottom of the seventh. In a 0-0 contest with two outs in the inning, Kristen Niland worked a walk and was lifted in favor of pinch runner, Emily Gilmore. Amanda Nee was hit by a pitch, advancing Gilmore to second, before Royle laced a single into short left. Gilmore hit third and was waved home but the throw from the left fielder beat Gilmore to the plate. The Pioneer catcher applied the tag, sending the game to extra innings.

Sacred Heart was unable to do any damage in the top of the eighth.

Moving to the home half of the inning, pinch hitter Faythe Goins took first after being hit by a pitch. Scribner re-entered, taking Goins place at first. Laurine German's sharp groundball to third was scooped by the Sacred Heart third baseman. However, her throw would sail wide of second and into right field, allowing Scribner to come in with the game winning run.

The Black Bears return to America East action on Wednesday with a single game at UMass Lowell beginning at 3 p.m.
