NM State Tops Baseball in Series Finale, 8-5

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The University of Maine baseball team fell to New Mexico State University, 8-5, on Sunday afternoon at Presley Askew Field.

The Black Bears (4-17) recorded 12 hits, including three home runs, and scored in five different innings. The Aggies (13-8) had 10 hits, three of them home runs too, and also scored in five different innings but two runs each in the first, third and sixth sealed the game.

Danny Casals finished 3-for-4 with one home run and one double while Cody Pasic finished 1-for-4 with one home run and two runs scored while Colin Ridley had a long ball as well. Kevin Doody recorded two hits for Maine.

Like every other game in the non-conference series, Maine got the first run on the board. Cody Pasic connected on a curveball from Jonathan Groff and put it over the fence in right center. Maine went on to load the bases in the inning, but Groff got out of the jam with a strikeout.

In the third, Casals homered to tie the game but two runs for the Aggies gave the hosts a lead they would not give up.

Caleb Kerbs knocked a ball to short in the sixth that allowed Brandon Vicens – who had reached on a double to lead off the inning – to score but a two-run home run from Nick Haupt in the bottom half extended the lead for NM State.

Maine kept pushing, loading the bases with three straight walks to start the eighth but only got one run across on a sacrifice fly from Hernen Sardinas.

Ridley led off the ninth with a long ball over the right field fence and then a Jonathan Bennet single, Jeremy Pena walk and Casals single loaded the bases with two outs but Whittlesey retired Vicens to end it, 8-5.

Groff went 6.0 innings for the Aggies, allowing three runs on nine hits while striking out seven and walking two in the win. Chris Murphy started and pitched 4.0 innings for Maine, giving up five runs on six hits to go with three strikeouts and four walks. John Arel pitched 3.0 innings, giving up three runs on four hits, while Ben Terwilliger pitched the final inning for Maine without giving up a hit and striking out two.

Maine will start America East play next weekend at Hartford.
