Softball Takes Two From Iona

Clearwater, Fla. -- The Black Bears combined to surrender just one run over 14.0 innings as Maine swept a doubleheader from Iona on Tuesday afternoon. Maine took game one, 5-1, before shutting down the Gaels' offense in a 1-0 victory to wrap up the sweep.

Laurine German boasted three hits, scored a run and stole a base to help lead a Maine offense which recorded 12 hits on the day. Kristen Niland added two hits with a double and one RBI while Alyssa Derrick drove in a pair.

Maine scored runs in each of the first three innings to jump out to an early start in game one.

Erika Leonard began the game with a walk before advancing on German's single to right. Rachel Carlson's fielder's choice moved Leonard to third before she would come in to score on another fielder's choice, this time on an RBI groundout by Maddie Decker.

The Black Bears added a run in the top of the second when Niland, who double to start the inning, later came in to score on a two out single to center from Leonard.

Iona cut the lead in half with a run in the bottom of the second but Maine answered right back, plating a pair in the third.

Derrick worked a one out walk before advancing on Decker's single. Meghan Royle's RBI single brought in Derrick before Niland dropped a single into center, scoring Royle.

The Black Bears tacked on a run in the top of the seventh. Back to back singles from German and Carlson gave Maine runners on the corners. Derrick's sacrifice fly to center allowed Carlson to tag and score, giving Maine a 5-1 lead.

Maine retired the Gaels in order in the seventh to take the victory, 5-1.

Lilly Volk earned her first career win with an impressive outing in the circle. Volk went 5.0 innings, scattering seven hits and giving up one run with one strikeout. Molly Flowers picked up a save after tossing a one-hit shutout with a strikeout over 2.0 innings.

In game two, Maine survived three errors and broke a scoreless tie with a single run in the sixth before handing on to a 1-0 victory over Iona.

O'Donnell earned her first career victory after tossing a one-hut shutout with three strikeouts over 6.0 innings of action. Annie Kennedy came on to earn her second save of the season after giving up one hit with one strikeout.

The lone run of the game came in the home half of the sixth. Faythe Goins' pinch hit single to center started the inning. Goins was replaced on the basepath by Shanna Scribner who advanced to second on German's single. With two outs in the inning, Derrick's opposite field single to right brought around Scribner with the eventual winning run.

Maine is back in action on Wednesday evening when it takes on South Florida at 5 p.m.
