Softball Falls to Robert Morris, South Dakota State

Tampa, Fla. -- On day two of its spring break swing, the University of Maine softball team suffed a pair of setbacks, losing to Robert Morris, 7-4, and South Dakota State, 8-0.

Maddie Decker, who has reached base safely in five straight games, went 3-for-4 with two RBI in game one while Erika Leonard chipped in a pair of hits and one run. Meghan Royle drove in one with two hits while Rachel Carlson scored two and added a triple. Alyssa Derrick led the way in game two with a pair of hits.

For the second time in its last three games, the Black Bears were able to notched double-digit hits with 11 against Robert Morris.

Maine got out to a hot start in game one, taking a 2-0 lead in the first. Leonard began with a walk before advancing on Laurine German's single and reaching third on a fielder's choice. Derrick's single back up the middle brought in Leonard before Decker's base hit played Carlson.

Robert Morris' first hitter of the day cut the lead in half with a solo shot before Olivia Lorusso's RBI single knotted the game at 2-2.

The Colonials grabbed their first lead of the day with three runs in the home half of the second.

Maine answered with a pair of runs in the fifth. Carlson started the rally with a leadoff triple. Decker's two-out single down the line in left brought in Carlson before Royle's RBI double to left scored pinch runner Emily Gilmore. After five, the Black Bears trailed Robert Morris, 5-4.

However, Maine was unable to close the gap. Robert Morris pushed across two more runs in the sixth before ultimately taking the contest, 7-4.

Kyleigh O'Donnell took the loss for Maine after giving up four runs, three earned, on five hits with one strikeouts in 1.1 innings. Annie Kennedy tossed 4.2 innings of relief, surrendering three unearned runs with six hits and a strikeouts.

The Black Bears fell behind early in game two and were unable to get the bats going, recording just three hits in an 8-0, five-inning loss to South Dakota State.

Derrick recorded two of Maine's three hits to lead the offense for the Black Bears.

Maine looked to get on the board early when German drew a first inning walk before moving along to third on Derrick's single. However, the Black Bears would strand the pair.

The Jackrabbits rallied for three runs in the bottom of the first and added four more in the second, powered by Paige Gerdes three-run homer to left.

Yanney Ponce's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth plated Lyndsey Crist to put the game away.

Molly Flowers suffers the loss for Maine after the senior went 1.1 innings, giving up six runs, five earned, on three hits and four walks with a strikeout. Lilly Volk came on to work 3.1 innings of relief, giving up two runs on two hits with a strikeout.

The Black Bears continue action on Sunday when they take on Southern Illinois University at 11:15 a.m.
