WILMINGTON, N.C. -- For the second consecutive day, the University of Maine softball team went 1-1 at the 2018 Seahawk Classic. The Black Bears avenged a loss to UNC Wilmington on day one with a 5-1 victory on Saturday before falling to Bucknell, 3-0.
In game one,
Molly Flowers and
Annie Kennedy combined to surrender just one run while striking out six to lift the Black Bears over UNC Wilmington, 5-1.
Rachel Carlson continued her early season tear at the dish, going 3-for-4 with a triple and two runs while
Erika Leonard and
Alyssa Derrick each added an RBI.
The Black Bears broke a scoreless tie with a single run in the top of the second.
Meghan Royle started the inning with a leadoff single before stealing and second and later coming around to score on
Kristen Niland's single to center which was bobbled by the Seahawks's outfielder.
Carlson started the third with a triple before scoring on Derrick's sac-fly to right, giving Maine a 2-0 lead.
UNC Wilmington cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning on Lacey Fox's RBI single to short.
Maine distanced itself late, pushing across three runs in the top of the seventh.
Shanna Scribner drew a one-out walk before singles from
Faythe Goins and Carlson loaded the bases. Leonard's groundout to short brought in Scribner before Derrick was able to reach on a throwing error. Carlson and
Sarah Coyne, who reentered after Goins' single, each scored on the error, giving Maine a 5-1 advantage.
Kennedy shut the door in the bottom of the inning to secure Maine's 5-1 victory.
Flowers picked up the win, her first of the season, after scattering four hits and giving up one run with four strikeouts over 4.0 innings. Kennedy notched her first save of the season, tossing 3.0 innings of one hit, shutout ball while fanning a pair.

Maine's bats were silenced in game two as the Black Bears were held to just two hits in a 3-0 loss to Bucknell.
Alyssa Derrick and
Amanda Nee tallied the only hits for the Black Bears.
Kyleigh O'Donnell, who started in the circle for the Black Bears, turned in a solid performance. O'Donnell tossed 4.0 innings of no-hit shutout ball with three strikeouts and a walk. Volk picks up the tough loss in relief, surrendering three runs on four hits with a strikeout and two walks over 2.0 innings. Kennedy added an inning of shutout relief, fanning one.
Neither team could push a run across in the opening four innings.
Bucknell took a 3-0 lead with a three-run top of the fifth. Taylor Wolfgang's one-out RBI double to the gap in left center allowed Ryanne Rokos to score from first. Following a groundout, Bucknell plated two more with a two out rally. Tara Baglivo's single to center scored Wolfgang before Baglivo came in on Lauren Hadley's single.
In the bottom of the seventh, Nee was able to record her first career hit, but Maine was unable to take advantage.
The Black Bears were held scoreless in the Saturday finale, dropping the contest by a 3-0 final.
Maine closes out its weekend at the Seahawk Classic on Sunday when it meets Longwood at 9 a.m.
