Temple Breaks 10-Year Old School Record; Men’s Swimming Stands in Third after Day Three

WORCESTER, Mass. – Freshman Kazu Temple broke the UMaine school record in the 100-yd breaststroke, as the Black Bears completed day three of the America East Championships at the Sport and Recreation Center on the campus of Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

After the third day of competition, the Black Bears stand in third place, totaling 365.5 points.

Temple's time of 56.66 in the 100-yd breast bested Nathan Richard's previous record of 56.70, which was set in 2007. The time earned Maine 14 points in a fifth place finish. Sean Driscoll (58.78) placed eighth in the event. Jack McNamara (59.33) held the fastest time in the 'B' final, placing ninth overall. Justin Hafner (1:00.78) followed in 11^th place in the 23^rd event of the championships.

Kevin Clyne put together a successful day with a fifth place finish in the 100-yd butterfly with a time of 50.76. In the 'B' final, Calvin Cleworth and Nick Gould put together top times of 51.50 and 51.86, respectively. Jacob Ketch followed with a 13^th overall place, registering a time of 53.09.

In the 200-yd freestyle, Coulter Morrill took seventh, hitting the touch pad in a time of 1:44.88 to earn Maine 12 points. Alexander Penn (1:45.72) and Andy Sprague (1:46.89) swam in the 'B' final, taking 10^th and 12^th in the event 21 of the championships.

Driscoll also earned a ninth place finish in the 400-yd individual medley, completing the event in a time of 4:13.88. In the 'B' final, Hayden Kasavicha Andrew Plese, Alexander Watson, and Hawthorne Swan-Scott all competed.

In the 'B' final of the 100-yd backstroke, Gould (53.07) earned 11^th place, while Connor Mayhew (53.35) took 13^th.

The Black Bears capped the day with the 400-yd medley relay, as the group Mayhew, Temple, Clyne, and Sprague recorded a time of 3:26.21 for third place.

UMBC continues to lead with 730 points. Binghamton follows in second with 550.5 points, and the Virginia Military Institute has 219 points for fourth place after day three.

Maine begins the final day of competition tomorrow, with the prelims beginning at 10:00 a.m., followed by the finals at 5:30 p.m.
