Men’s Swimming Finishes Third at America East Championships

WORCESTER, Mass. – Following another record breaking performance, the UMaine men's swimming and diving team wrapped up the America East Championship weekend on Sunday night at the Sport and Recreation Center on campus of Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

After the fourth and final day, the UMaine men finished third overall, garnering a total of 576.5 points.

In the same race, Kazu Temple and Sean Driscoll broke the school record time in the 200-yd breaststroke, as Temple's time of 2:04.23 and Driscoll's 2:04.49 bested Nathan Richard's time of 2:05.67, which was set in 2007. Temple earned a fourth place finish in the event, while Driscoll followed in fifth. Coulter Morrill (8^th, 2:08.23) and Jack McNamara (9^th, 2:08.44) also swam in the event.

The final relay and event of the America East Championships was the 400-yd freestyle relay, as the Black Bears took third with a time of 3:06.59. Andy Sprague, Kevin Clyne, Jacob Ketch, and Coulter Morrill came within three-tenths of a second of a school-record time, which is 3:06.33.

A sixth and eighth place finish in the 200-yd butterfly by Sprague (1:56.58) and Calvin Cleworth (1:56.90) added 24 points to Maine's team score.

Alexander Watson earned 11 points for Maine in the 1650-yd freestyle, hitting the touchpad with a time of 17:14.28 in an eighth place finish. Andrew Plese (17:28.05) came right after Watson, taking ninth.

Ketch and Clyne earned the top-two times for Maine in the 100-yd freestyle, swimming times of 47.64, and 47.66 respectively. Alexander Penn was competed in the event, taking 13^th with a time of 48.46.The three swims earned Maine a combined 19 points.

Two Black Bears reached top-10 performances in the 200-yd backstroke, as Connor Mayhew (1:53.64) grabbed seventh, while Nick Gould (1:58.65) took 10^th. Andrew Please (2:03.18) earned a 13^th place finish, followed by Drew St. Jean (2:03.37) in 14^th.

In the 1 meter dive, Kyle Adams and Ben Sturgis took seventh and eighth place, earning 246.90 and 184.15 points, respectively.

UMBC came in first with 1113 points, with Binghamton earning runner-up honors with 817.5 points. The Virginia Military Institute finished in fourth with 358 points.
