Baseball Drops Both Ends of Doubleheader at No. 3 Texas Tech

LUBBOCK, Texas -- The University of Maine baseball team fell to No. 3 Texas Tech on Saturday afternoon, dropping both games of its doubleheader by scores of 12-1 and 12-5, respectively.

Jeremy Pena tallied three hits and scored three runs, including blasting his first home run of the season, while Danny Casals added a pair of hits and a run scored.

In game one, the Red Raiders plated three in the second before putting the game out of reach with a five-run eighth to seal a 12-1 victory.
 
Casals paced Maine's offense, going 1-for-2 with a walk while scoring the Black Bears' lone run. Brandon Vicens added an RBI single for Maine while Cody Pasic drew a pair of walks and added his first hit of the season.
 
Texas Tech broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the home half of the second. Grant Little started the rally with an RBI double to the gap in right center. The Black Bears traded a run for outs when Connor Beck grounded into a 6-4-3 double play, bringing in Little from third. The lead extended to 3-0 on Cody Farhat's RBI triple to center.
 
The Red Raiders tacked on a run in the third before the Black Bears found the scoreboard in the top of the fifth. Casals singled through the left side before advancing to second on a ground out by Jonathan Bennett. Vicens' two-out single to right brought in Casals with Maine's first run.
 
Texas Tech added an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth before plating a pair in the seventh. With runners on second and third and one out, Michael Davis flew out to left allowing Little to tag and score. Farhat followed with a two-out RBI on a single into left.
 
The Red Raiders put the game out of reach with five runs in the eighth. Josh Jung's two run homer to right extended the lead to 9-1. Beck drove in another run on a double play groundout before KC Simonich's two run single to right pushed the Red Raiders' advantage to 12-1.
 
Maine was unable to cut into the lead in its final at bat, dropping game one 12-1.
 
Eddie Emerson took the loss on the hill for the Black Bears after surrendering four runs on five hits and six walks with a strikeout over 4.0 innings.

In game two, Texas Tech managed to plate nine runs in the bottom of the first on its way to a 12-5 win. Pena led the Black Bears, going 3-for-5 with three runs scored a double and his first home run of the season.
 
The Black Bears struck first in game one, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Pena's leadoff double started things for Maine. Pena was able to advance to third on Pasic's flyout to left before scoring on a throwing error by the Red Raiders.
 
Texas Tech responded with nine runs in the bottom of the first thanks to four home runs. Holt led off the inning with a solo shot to right before Little and Cameron Warren went back-to-back before Davis brought in a pair on a two-run homer to right. The rally continued when Jung's single through the right side plated two more, giving the hosts a 9-1 advantage after one.
 
The Black Bears were able to get one back in the second when Pena led off the inning with a solo shot to left center.
 
Texas Tech added a pair to its lead in the fourth. Clay Koelzer came in to score on Little's double down the left field line before Beck's single up the middle brought around Little, giving the Red Raiders a 11-2 advantage.
 
Moving into the seventh, the Black Bears were again able to put together a rally. Pena singled through the left side for his third hit of the game before advancing after Pasic was hit by a pitch. Hernen Sardinas' single back up the box brought in Pena. Casals and Bennett drew back-to-back walks to score Pasic, closing the gap to 11-4.
 
A sacrifice fly from Farhat in the bottom of the inning regained an eight run lead for the Red Raiders.
 
The Black Bears had one final rally left in them, plating a single run in the top of the eight. Caleb Kerbs started the action by reaching due to catcher's interference, advanced to second on a Pasic walk before scoring on Christopher Bec's single to right.
 
However it would be as close as Maine would get, falling in game two by a final of 12-5.
 
Maine closes its series at Texas Tech with a 2 p.m. first pitch set for Sunday afternoon.
