WORCESTER, Mass. – Highlighted by a school-record breaking performance in the 200-yd freestyle relay, the Maine men's swimming and diving team completed day two of the America East Championships on Friday night at the Sports and Recreation Center on the campus of Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
After the second day of competition, the Maine men sit in third place with a total of 197 points.
Justin Hafner,
Kevin Clyne,
Andy Sprague, and
Jacob Ketch finished the 200-yd freestyle in a time of 1:23.46, which broke the previous school record of 1:23.89. The time was good enough for second place, earning Maine 34 points in the final event of the day for the men.
The four record-breakers also competed in the 50-yd freestyle, with Sprague (21.10) earning the Black Bears nine additional points, by placing ninth. Ketch (21.46) followed in 11
th, Clyne (21.56) in 12
th, and Hafner (21.57) in 13
th.
Drew St. Jean (22.04) also swam in the 50-yard freestyle.
In the 200-yd individual medley, a time of 1:53.78 by
Kazu Temple was good enough for seventh place.
Coulter Morrill (1:57.24) and
Jack McNamara (1:58.24) followed Temple in ninth and 10
th place in event 11.
Hayden Kasavicha recorded a time of 4:46.03 in the 500-yd freestyle to earn the Black Bears nine points towards its team score.
Alexander Penn (4:46.77) finished directly behind Kasavicha in 10
th place.
Connor Mayhew (4:57.86),
Alexander Watson (5:02.57), and
Jake Gutkes (5:02.66) also swam in the event.
UMBC tops the men's rankings with 362 points, while Binghamton sits in second with 286. The Virginia Military Institute rounds out the the teams with 116 points after day two.
