PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island-- The University of Maine women's ice hockey fell 3-1 against the Providence Friars in a tight Hockey East contest Friday night.

Maine took the lead to start, but in a battle for every inch, the Black Bears came up just short in a tough road game against Providence.

1st period, 6:43 | Tereza Vanisova handled a pass from
Ali Beltz cutting across the left side faceoff circle. Vansiova, unopposed by the defense, stickhandled and deked the goaltender to slide it between the pads. 1-0 Maine.

1st period, 13:17 | With a flurry in front, puck sailed high on a diving Jackson, it's lifted up and squeaked across the goal line before being whipped out on a defensive effort by Tereza Vansiova. Upon official review it was deemed a good goal; Neve Van Pelt's second of the season for Providence. Tied 1-1.

2nd period, 12:40 | On the power play, the Friars wasted no time with the extra attacker. Avery Fransoo, from the top of the blueline, sent a crisp pass to Christina Putigna who flipped it over to Kate Friesen. Friesen sent off a quick wrist shot to give Providence a 2-1 lead.

3rd period, 17:59 | Christina Putigna scored an empty net goal as the Black Bears pressured for the tying goal with two and a half to play. Â The empty net tally gave the Friars a 3-1 lead that would stand as the final score of the Hockey East match-up.

Carly Jackson turned away 31 shots on goal. A slew of challenging saves earned the goaltender third star honors.
- The Black Bears went 0-for-3 on the power play and were able to kill two of the Friars three power play opportunities.
- Maine blocked 5 shots during the conference contest, and posted 24 shots on goal against Providence.
