Wagg’s Hat Trick Propels Maine to America East Championship Game in Shutout Over Stanford

Maine will play Albany tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. EST in the America East Championship Game.

STANFORD, Calif. Led offensively by a hat trick from Samantha Wagg, the No. 2 East Seed UMaine field hockey team advanced to the America East Championship game after blanking the defending America East Champion Stanford, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon at Varsity Field Hockey Turf.
 
No. 2 East Seed Maine will take on No. 1 Seed East Seed Albany in the America East Championship game. The Great Danes defeated Pacific 4-3 on Saturday afternoon advance to the championship.
 
Wagg tallied goals in the 26th,  29th and 35th minutes, with the first two goals resulting on penalty corners, while the third came on a penalty stroke. Emily Hindle and Riley Field earned assists on Maine's first goal of the contest.
 
Freshman Mia Borley was impressive in the cage, recording eight saves against the Cardinal. America East  Co-Goalkeeper Kelsey Bing stopped six Black Bear shots in 56 minutes played.
 
MAINE GAME NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS
  • Stanford held a 13-12 edge in shots, but Maine led in shots on goal by a 9-8 margin.
  • After the first half, Maine led in penalty corners by a 5-2 mark. Stanford rallied with eight penalty corners in the second half, but Borley and the Black Bear did not allow a score.
  • Maine entered the contest ranked No. 18 in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Poll, while Stanford is ranked No. 22. 
  • Stanford was last shutout against then No. 10 Iowa in a 3-0 loss on Oct. 7.   
  • Wagg now has 10 goals and 24 points on the season, which ranks third-best on the team.
  • Wagg is now 2-for-4 on penalty strokes this season.
  • Borley now has five shutouts in her freshman campaign.
  • Maine and Albany have met twice this season, with the two teams splitting results. Maine won 2-1 in a double-overtime thriller on Sept. 30 in Orono, while Albany earned a 1-0 victory in New York's state capital on Oct. 19.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • 26' | Wagg took a pass from Field on an insertion from Hindle and Wagg, as the senior weaved through the circle and fired a shot off the goalkeeper's pad into the cage.
  • 29' |  In a similar play three minutes later, Wagg received a pass in the circle and rocketed a shot off a Stanford defender and into the goal.
  • 35' | Wagg completed the hat trick on a penalty stroke, as the Melbourne, Australia native dialed a shot to the left of Bing, who dove correctly, but not in time.
