Black Bears Down Golden Bears in 4-3 Double Overtime Thriller in America East Quarterfinals

Maine will play Stanford tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. EST in the America East semifinals.

STANFORD, Calif. For the second-consecutive game, Brianna Ricker tallied a goal in double-overtime to lift the Black Bears to a 4-3 victory over California on Friday night at Varsity Field Hockey Turf in the America East quarterfinals. 

Ricker tallied two goals in total, while Libby Riedl and Casey Crowley both found the back of the cage for Maine. Yvie Lock, Femke Dellison and Melina Moore all scored goals for the Golden Bears.
 
Mia Borley made seven saves for Maine in the victory. Danielle Mentink registered six in the loss for Cal.  

MAINE GAME NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS
  • Maine led in shots by a 21-19 margin, while Cal held a 11-10 advantage on shots on goal.
  • Cal held a 11-10 lead in penalty corners.
  • Maine overcame a deficit with just over four minutes left in regulation for the second-straight game.
  • The Black Bears evened  the all-time seires with Cal at 3-3 with the win.
  • Maine and Stanford meet for the first time since last season, when the Cardinal earned a 4-1 win at UNH on Sept. 24.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • 4' | On a penalty corner, Emily Hindle inserted to Riley Field, who dished to Wagg. Wagg fired a shot, which deflected off a Golden Bear right to Ricker, who lifted a shot past the Cal goalkeeper.
  • 4' | Just 22 seconds later, Cal responded as Melina Moore was able to gain possession deep in the Maine defensive circle, as Moore lifted a high shot into the cage.
  • 27' | Rieldl was off on a breakaway after passes from Cassandra Mascarenhas and Field, as Riedl's shot went past the left-side of the diving Cal goalkeeper.
  • 35' | After the halftime intermission on a penalty corner, Brynn Zorilla inserted to Lindsay Mathison to Femke Delissen whose shot found the back of the cage.
  • 46' | Off a penalty corner, Delissen took a shot that found Yvie Lock's stick for the deflection into the cage for Cal's first lead of the game.
  • 65' | With just over four minutes left in regulation, Riedl found Brittany Smith in front of the circle, who fired a shot, as Crowley defelected the shot in to tie the game at 3-3.
  • 95' | On a breakaway, beat several defenders, before making a move past the goalkeeper and firing a shot to the left of the goalkeeper.
