Wadling's Double-Double Lifts Maine Past Bryant

Black Bears off to 2-0 start for first time since 2013

Smithfield, R.I. -- Fanny Wadling tallied her second career double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds while two other Black Bears finished with double-figure scoring efforts as the University of Maine women's basketball team (2-0) cruised to a 74-57 victory at Bryant (2-1) on Tuesday evening.

The Black Bears, off to a 2-0 start for the first time since 2013, executed well on the offensive end and another impressive defensive effort to pick up their second win of the season. Blanca Millan poured in a game-high 23 points, the 15th performance of her career in which she's recorded 20 or more points, to go along with nine rebounds and matching a career-high with three blocks. Tanesha Sutton added 17 points and five rebounds as the Black Bears finished the victory 29-for-59 (49.2%) from the floor.

Defensively, the Black Bears turned 17 Bryant turnovers into 16 points, finishing the night with 11 steals. The Black Bears are now 29-4 under Coach Vachon when they hold their opponent to 60 points or fewer.

Maine trailed for the opening 1:15 and then never again. The Black Bears closed the final 3:15 of the opening quarter on a 9-3 run, beginning with a triple from Dor Saar followed by four points from Sutton, as they carried a 23-13 lead into the second.

The lead continued to grow as Maine began the period on a 10-5 run. Sutton found Maeve Carroll for two, giving the Black Bears their largest lead of the first half, 33-18.

Bryant would end the half on a 5-0 run, trimming the lead to 10 at the break. However, Maine would break the 10 point deficit early in the third. Millan's 3-point began a 9-3 run for the Black Bears, a stretch in which Maine held Bryant without a field goal over a 4:27 span. During the run, Maine would see its lead swell to 53-37 with 3:11 left in the third.

Bryant once again closed within 10, rattling off a 6-0 run before Millan jumper at the buzzer sent Maine into the fourth with a 55-43 advantage.

The Black Bears continued to distance themselves in the fourth, opening the quarter with a 10-4 run to take their largest lead of the contest at 65-47. Maine continued to cruise down the stretch to seal a 74-57 victory.

Maine returns home to the Cross Insurance Center to host Duke on Thursday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. Tickets are available online at TicketMaster.com or by visiting the Cross Insurance box office during regular business hours.
