ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine women's soccer team was defeated by the Vermont Catamounts, 2-1, in overtime on Sunday afternoon at the Mahaney Diamond.
Â
Vermont found the back of the net first. The Catamounts were awarded a free kick from just outside of the box. Senior forward Casey Garfinkel elected to take the kick. She fired a shot that tipped off UMaine's
Annalena Kriebisch's glove and into the goal. Vermont held a 1-0 lead with 20 minutes left in the half.
Â
With two minutes remaining,
Amanda Sandberg took a corner kick from the nearside corner. The defender found another defender,
Jane Stevens, in front of the Catamounts' goal. Stevens redirected the corner past the Vermont goaltender. The two Maine defenders combined to tied the game for the Black Bears. The 1-1 scored would stand into halftime.
Â
Neither team was able to pull away in the second half. Corner kicks provided the best opportunities for the two conference rivals. Sandberg delivered two corners that were nearly goals for the Black Bears, while the Catamounts failed to capitalize on their corners, as well. Wind and cold weather negatively affected each offense as regulation ended in a tie.
Â
In the lone overtime period, Vermont only needed 1:55 to score the game winning goal. UMaine originally turned away the Catamount's corner kick chance, but the road team collected the clear and fired the ball on net. Kriebisch saved the initial shot, but Alyssa Oviedo headed home the game ending goal for a 2-1 Vermont victory.
Â
Shots/Keepers
The two teams tied 5-to-5 in shots on goal, while the Catamounts won the corner kick battle, 6-5.
Â
Keeper Kriebisch made three saves in goal for UMaine, while her Vermont counterpart, Lauren Huff, made four.
