LEWISTON, Maine – The Maine Black Bears men's track and field team traveled to Southern Maine on Saturday to compete in the Bates Invitational at Walter Slovenski Track.
UMaine and Bryant were the lone Division I teams at the invitational, as Maine earned a total of 102 points compared to Bryant's 51. By rule, Division I teams are scored separately than Division III teams. Bates, Colby, Husson, Keene State, and St. Joseph's also competed on Saturday.
Mozai Nelson won the 60m dash, with a time of 7.03, while
Benjamin Davis followed as the runner up by tallying a time of 7.05. Davis would evetually win the 200m dash in a time of 23.01.
Jacob Johns won two events on the day, taking the 1000m run in a time of 2:34.70, while also placing first in the 1 mile run (4:20.88). Two Black Bears followed Johns in the mile, as
John Hassett (4:23.54) and
Logan Moses (4:35.90) earned second and third.
Aaron Willingham was the lone competitor in the 3000m run, earning Maine five team points with a time of 8:43.60.
In the 5000m run,
Jacob Terry bested teammate
Simon Powhida with Terry finishing the run in a time of 15:31.89, while Powhida finished in 15:51.61.
Running against his fellow teammates,
Colton Santoro won the 60m hurdles in a time of 8.70.
Maine swept both relays, as the crew of
Andrew Clement,
Garrett Johnson,
Branden Kuusela and Nelson finished the 4x800 relay over 26 seconds faster than the Bryant with a time of 3:28.26. The squad of
Tucker Corbett, Hassett, Johns, and
Cooper Nelson earned a time of 8:11.02, which bested the Bryant time of 8:31.53.
The Black Bears dominated the field events, winning four of the six events.
Troy Davis put together another strong performance, with wins in the high jump (2.05m) and long jump (6.66m). The high jump of 2.05 is a new personal best, and met the IC4A qualifying standard. Maine earned the top five distances in the long jump as a team.
Johnson earned a victory in the pole vault (4.10m), while
Elijah White took the triple jump (13.61m). Thomas Murray was the runner-up in the shot put (14.52m), and
Adam Lufkin took a second place nod in the weight throw (13.90m).
Alecsander Wortman won the heptathlon, by winning four of the seven events on Friday.
The Maine men are back in action next Saturday, with the team split between the Terrier Classic in Boston, and a quad meet at UNH.
