Black Bears Stymied by No. 12 Stanford, 4-1

DURHAM, N.H. – The Maine Black Bears field hockey team fell to No. 12 Stanford 4-1 on Sunday afternoon at Memorial Field on the campus of the University of New Hampshire. Samantha Wagg scored the lone goal for the Black Bears on assists from Libby Riedl and Emily Hindle off a penalty corner.

Maine falls to 6-3 on the season, as they open up America East East Division play next weekend. Stanford (7-2) won its seventh straight contest, and lead the West Division in the America East.

The Black Bears led in the shots (9-8) and penalty corners (4-2), while Stanford held tough in shots on goal (6-4) and saves (3-2).

MAINE GAME NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS
  • Stanford now leads the all-time series against Maine, 3-2.
  • The Black Bears outshot the Cardinal by a count of 9-8 on the day, and have now outshot the opposition in seven straight games.
  • Stanford's elite defense that allowed 1.35 goals per game coming into the weekend did not let the Black Bears shoot often. Maine has averaged 20 shots per game on the season.
  • While Maine led Stanford in penalty corners, the Black Bears were averaging 7.86 per game heading into the weekend.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cardinal scored early on, as Stanford's Kristina Bassi redirected a shot from Corrine Zanolli to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Zanolli added to Stanford's lead just over 10 minutes later when she received a pass from Millie Stefanowicz from the top of the circle and deposited the ball on the low left side.
  • Maine responded quickly after the second Stanford goal, converting a penalty corner in the 14th minute. The combination of Hindle to Riedl to Wagg that has been lethal this season, helped cut the deficit to 2-1 in today's game. Wagg shot low on the right side to give Maine its lone score of the game.
  • Zanolli recorded her seventh goal of the season, again from Stefanowicz to take a 3-1 lead in the 52nd minute.
  • Stanford padded its lead on a penalty corner when Sarah Johnson put in a rebound off the post in the 58th minute.
UP NEXT
  • Maine will travel to UMass Lowell to begin America East East Division play on Sunday. Game time is slated for 1:00 p.m.
