Baseball: Maine defeats Colby College 10-2

Bennett tallied three RBIs and Emerson notches his first win in the contest.

ORONO, Maine - The Black Bears finished off Maine Day by taking on the Colby College Mules Wednesday at 5pm, and took the matchup by the final score of 10-2. The game was the 256th meeting of the two teams.

Maine got on the board early in the bottom of the second as Jonathan Bennett started the night off with his first of three RBIs, a single to center field that would score Lou Della Fera from third base. Later in the inning Christopher Bec would score from third on a sacrifice fly-out by Brandon Vicens, and the Black Bears led 2-0 after one full inning.

The Mules would answer back in the top of the first as a runner scored on a passed ball to cut Maine's lead in half, but Maine answered back in the bottom of the second with a massive five-run inning, starting with an RBI bunt single by Jeremy Pena, scoring Caleb Kerbs from third in the safety squeeze. An infield single by Bec would score Cody Pasic from third, and a passed ball would advance Bec to second, scoring Pena from third. Bec would come home on a Tyler Schwanz RBI double, and Schwanz would score on a Hernen Sardinas single to center field. Maine would lead 7-1 after two full innings of play.

Maine would tally three more in the third, another Jonathan Bennett single would score two, and Brandon Vicens would single to left field, putting Maine up 10-1. Colby would get one back in the fouth on an RBI double, but the score would hold for a final of 10-2.

Chris Murphy got the start for Maine, he went 3.0 innings, allowing three hits, two walks and an earned run, but striking out three. The winning pitcher, Eddie Emerson, entered the game in the sixth inning, allowing four hits, no walks, no earned runs, and striking out two. Other Black Bear relievers in the game were Zach Winn (2.0 IP, 2 hits, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K's) and Matthew Pushard (2.0 IP, 0 hits, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K's).
