LOWELL, Massachusetts - The Black Bears, after losing their first tournament game, won four straight games to make it to the championship round. Just two wins away from earning a championship, the Black Bears fell to the undefeated UMBC Retreivers on a walk off in the bottom of the 10th inning, 2-1.
The Black Bears got off to an early lead in the first inning on a sac-fly from
Christopher Bec with
Jeremy Pena on third after his lead-off single. Maine led 1-0 after one inning of play.
UMBC tied the game back up in the fourth on their own sac-fly. It was 1-1 after four innings.
Maine starter
Justin Courtney allowed seven hits in his 5.0 inning effort, only allowing one run, no walks, and striking out two. He would be relieved by
Jeff Gelinas in the sixth inning.
The game would remain tied through the later innings despite Maine's 13 total hits; the Black Bears left a total 12 runners on base, unable to capitalize at the plate with runners in scoring position.
With the game tied after nine, with Gelinas retiring the Retreivers in a one, two, three inning in the ninth, the game would go to extra innings. A leadoff double in the 10th by
Tyler Schwanz was all for not, as the next three batters for Maine were retired in order. In the bottom of the tenth, with the bases loaded, the Retrievers forced a walk allowing the game-winning run to advance to home, winning the game 2-1.
Jeff Gelinas finishes the season with a 1-4 record, and the Black Bears finish with a 25-29 record overall, 4-2 in the tournament.
