Worcester, Mass. -- The University of Maine softball team scored four runs in the top of the seventh to complete a 5-4 comeback victory at Holy Cross on Wednesday evening. The Black Bears have now won four in a row and 10 of their last 11.
Alyssa Derrick, the reigning America East Player of the Week, remained hot at the plate going 1-for-2 with two runs and a pair of walks while recording her 10th home run of the spring.
Rachel Harvey added a two-RBI double while
Felicia Lennon also drove in a run.
Annie Kennedy went the distance to earn her first shutout victory, improving to 5-3 on the year. Kennedy gave up four runs, one earned, on eight hits with three strikeouts and no walks.
The Black Bears fell into an early hole, trailing by three runs after the first inning.
Holy Cross carried its three-run lead into the sixth inning where Maine was finally able to get on the board. Harvey began the inning by reaching on an error. The throwing mishap allowed her to advance all the way to third base. Lennon's sacrifice fly brought in Harvey, cutting the lead to 3-1.
The Crusaders would answer in the bottom of the sixth on Sydney Burr's RBI triple, once again extending the lead out to three.
A thrilling four-run top of the seventh put Maine on top for the first time in the game.
Rachel Carlson reached on a fielder's choice to give Maine a runner on first with two outs.
Faythe Goins worked a walk and was replaced on the bases by
Laurine German. Harvey's double to left brought in both Goins and German, cutting the Holy Cross lead to just one. Derrick followed by blasting her 10th homer over the wall in center, giving Maine a 5-4 edge.
Kennedy and the defense held on as Maine won its fourth in a row by a 5-4 decision.
Maine dives back into America East action on Friday when they travel to begin a three-game set at UMBC. First pitch in Friday's single game is set for 3 p.m.
