ORONO, Maine - The Black Bears faced off with the Thomas College Terriers on Tuesday afternoon and despite an early lead for the Terriers, Maine took the game by the final score of 11-3 on two big four-run innings.
The Terriers found themselves up 1-0 after the top of the first inning as a throwing error allowed a run to score from third, but Maine would respond in the bottom of the second as with the bases loaded,
Jeremy Pena hit a deep ball that would award him three bases, as
Cody Pasic,
Caleb Kerbs, and
Hernen Sardinas all scored on the play. A subsequent throwing error to third base would allow Pena to stand up from his slide and take home, giving Maine a 4-1 lead after two innings.
In the bottom of the fourth, Maine would add to their lead as
Colin Ridley smacked a grand slam over the right field wall on the first pitch he saw, scoring Pasic, Kerbs, and Pena to give Maine an 8-1 lead.
Maine would add three more in the bottom of the sixth on two bases-loaded walks and a wild pitch, the walks giving RBIs to
Lou Della Fera andÂ
Hernen Sardinas, and the wild pitch scoring
Jonathan Bennett from third base. Maine led 11-1 after six innings of play.
Thomas would get two runs back in the top of the seventh inning, on a sacrifice fly to right field and a runner taking home from third on a wild pitch, but Maine would shut down the Terriers in the final two innings to end the game 11-3.
Trevor DeLaite gets his first win of the season putting his record to 1-2, as he went 4.0 innings, allowing one unearned run, four hits, one walk, and striking out three.
Matthew Pushard came in to close for the Black Bears and retired three of the four batters he faced, walking one. Also seeing action for the Black Bears on the mound was
Zach Winn (2.0 IP, 1 hit, 2 K's) and
Ryan Worthington (2.0 IP, 1 hit, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K's).
The Black Bears will face off with UMaine-Farmington on Wednesday afternoon at 4pm, and then will travel to Binghamton for a three game weekend series.
