Game Recap: Softball |

Pair of walk-off wins lead Softball over Stony Brook

Goins, Decker each record RBI walk-off singles

Orono, Maine -- Walk-off RBI singles from Faythe Goins in game one and Maddie Decker in game two led the University of Maine softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Stony Brook on Saturday afternoon at Kessock Field. Maine walked off with a 4-3 win in game one before a 3-2 walk-off victory in game two. The wins lift Maine to 6-1 in America East action.

Alyssa Derrick packed the offensive punch for the Black Bears as the sophomore third baseman went 6-for-8, including a 4-for-4 performance in game two, with a home run, two runs and two RBI. Derrick is now hitting an impressive .542 in America East action. Meghan Royle, Rachel Carlson, Rachel Harvey and Decker each added three hits.

In game one, Maine recorded a season-high 16 hits on its way to a 4-3 victory. Maine, which has now tallied 13 or more hits in three of its last five games, was led by Carlson and Royle who each finished 3-for-4 with a run scored.

Erin Bogdanovich went the distance in the win to earn her third victory of the year. Bogdanovich gave up three runs, two earned, all in the first inning before settling in to allow seven hits with five strikeouts.

Maine dug itself in an early hole, falling behind 3-0 in the first on Irene Rivera's three-run homer to right center.

The Black Bears answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth. Singles by Erika Leonard and Carlson begun the inning before the duo advanced to second and third on a sacrifice bunt from Harvey. Derrick drove in Maine's first run of the day with an RBI single to left. Carlson came in to score soon after on Royle's RBI single to third. The Black Bears knotted the game when Decker pushed a single through the right side.

Bogdanovich and the defense kept Stony Brook off the scoreboard, sending the tie game into the home half of the seventh.

Kristen Niland started the inning with a single to center and was lifted for pinch runner Emily Gilmore. Gilmore advanced to second on a sac b-unt from Lennon. Royle stepped in and ripped a single to short before Decker slipped a single through the right side. However, Gilmore was thrown out at the plate for the second out. But Maine continued fighting as Goins, who dug in as a pinch hitter, was the hero. Goins pushed a single through the right side to allow Royle to score from second, giving Maine a 4-3 victory.

Derrick led the way in game two, going 4-for-4 with a home run to help pace Maine to a 3-2 walk-off victory. Molly Flowers fought off a tough start to lock in and toss the complete game, 8.0 innings while giving up just two runs, one earned, on six hits with 10 strikeouts.

This time, Maine jumped out to a hot start with a run in the first. Carlson worked a walk before advancing on Harvey's single to center. A single from Derrick loaded the bases before Niland worked a bases loaded walk, scoring Carlson.

Stony Brook tied the game with a run in the top of the third but Maine answered with one of its own in the home half of the third on Derrick's solo blast to left center.

The Seawolves re-tied the game on Sami Duffy's RBI single.

The game would move into extra innings where Maine made some magic happen in the eighth. Derrick started the inning with her fourth hit of the game before being replaced by Gilmore. The pinch runner advanced on a wild pitch before Decker shot a single into right, bringing around Gilmore with the winning run.

Maine looks for the series sweep of Stony Brook when the two meet on Sunday at 11 a.m.
