Softball falters at No. 21 Arizona State

TEMPE, Ariz. -- The University of Maine softball team (1-5) was shutout by a score of 9-0 in five innings by No. 21 Arizona State (16-5) on Wednesday evening at Alberta B. Farrington Softball Stadium.

Erika Leonard, Felicia Lennon and Kristen Niland each recorded a hit for the Black Bears.

The Sun Devils' Alyssa Loza went the distance to earn the win, striking out 10 with no walks in 5.0 innings.

Arizona St. opened the scoring with Chelsea Gonzales' three-run homer in the bottom of the third.

The Sun Devils added a run in the bottom of the third before pushing across five in the fourth.

Skylar McCarty's two-run single down the line in left extended the lead to 6-0 before Randy Farricker added an RBI double. Gonzales drove in her fourth and fifth runs of the day with a double to center as the Sun Devils led 9-0 after four.

Maine was unable to chip into the lead in the fifth, dropping the contest 9-0 in a run-rule shortened five inning affair.

Molly Flowers fell to 1-2 in the circle after giving up three runs on two hits and a walk. Flowers fanned one in the loss. Erin Bogdanovich surrendered six runs, five earned, on six hits in an inning of relief while Annie Kennedy strike out one in an inning of work.

Maine is back on the diamond on Friday, March 10 as it begins the Colorado State Classic with a doubleheader. The Black Bears will take on Wisconsin at 2 p.m. before meeting host Colorado State at 5 p.m.
