Laia Sole and
Julie Brosseau combined for 36 points off the bench as the University of Maine women's basketball team (13-13, 6-5 America East) picked up a 66-60 road victory at Hartford (14-9, 5-5 AE) on Monday evening.
The win completed a regular season sweep of the Hawks and also snapped the Black Bears' four-game road losing streak.
Sole had another big game off the bench where she tallied a game-high 19 points to go along with seven rebounds on an 8-for-12 shooting night. Brosseau added a career-high 17 points with four 3-pointers.
Blanca Millan also finished in double-figures with 14 points.
The Black Bears shot 47.1-percent (24-for-51), including an 8-for-15 showing in the third quarter where it outscored Hartford 21-10. For Maine, it marked the 19th time scoring 20 or more point in a single quarter.
The first half featured back and forth action with 12 lead changes. Hartford, leading by four late in the first quarter, carried a 17-16 lead into the second after Brosseau knocked down the first of her four 3-pointers.
The Hawks extended their lead to three before Maine pieced together a 7-2 run, beginning with another triple by Brosseau, to take a 23-20 lead.
The Maine lead stretched to four on a fast break jumper by Brosseau before Hartford answered. Janelle Harrison finished off a 3-pointer play to cut the lead to one before Darby Lee's fast break bucket regained a one-point edge for the Hawks.
Two late free throws by Brosseau would give Maine a 33-32 lead at the break. The Black Bears would never trail again.
Maine's offense came out hot in the third quarter. The Black Bears raced out to a seven point lead after
Sigi Koizar capped a 7-2 run with her first bucket of the night.
Leading by four, Maine would end the quarter on a 10-2 run, with a pair of 3-pointers from Millan. The lead would reach 12, Maine's largest of the game, entering the fourth.
Hartford continued to fight, beginning the fourth with an 8-0 run over the opening 1:17 of the quarter, cutting the lead to four.
A jumper from Alyssa Reaves with 3:31 to play brought the Hawks within a pair.
However, the Black Bears ended the game with a 7-2 run to hold on with a 66-60 victory.
