NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. -- The University of Maine women's ice hockey team was defeated by a score of 7-2 on Friday afternoon at Merrimack.
Brooke Stacey and
Morgan Sakundiak each tallied a goal to lead the Black Bears.
Maine outshot Merrimack, 39-37, but Warrior goaltender Lea-Kristine Demers turned away 37 of Maine's 39 attempts to preserve the victory.
The Black Bears finished the game 0-for-1 with the extra skater while Merrimack capitalized on one of its two power play chances.
The Warriors opened the scoring 12:09 into the first period when Madison Morey found the back of the net.
Stacey and the Black Bears tied the score at one just over a minute later. For Stacey, the unassisted goal was her 12th of the season.
Merrimack ended the first period scoring with a power play goal from Katelyn Rae, which started a streak of three unanswered goals by the Warriors.
Trailing 4-1 nearing the end of the second period, Sakundiak ended the run with her sixth goal of the season. Washer began the play by moving the puck to Stacey who found Sakundiak for the goal with two minutes left in the second. The point was Stacey's 12th assist of the season.
The Warriors put the game out of reach in the third, scoring three more to give them a 7-2 victory.
Mariah Fujimagari fell to 2-3-0 on the season in net after turning away 26 shots in 48:25 of action. Jillan Flynn made four saves in relief.
Maine and Merrimack close the season series on Saturday with puck drop slated for 2 p.m.
