Bangor, Maine -- After matching a school-record with 14 three-point field goals in its last outing at No. 8 Ohio State, the Black Bears did two better, setting a new school-record with 16 made 3-pointers in a convincing 89-49 victory over visiting Maine Maritime Academy on Tuesday evening at the Cross Insurance Center.
Blanca Millan poured in a career-high six three-point field goals, finishing 6-of-7 from long distance, on her way to a game-high 24 points. Her 24 point effort marks the fourth time this season in which the sophomore has bested 20 points in a game. The total extended her double-figure scoring streak to eight games as she also padded the stat line with eight boards, three assists and three steals.
Millan was joined in double-figures by
Tanesha Sutton (13), Kelly Fogarty (13) and
Julie Brosseau (12). Brosseau finished the action 4-for-7 from 3-point range and has now recorded 11 triples in her last two games.
The Black Bears combined to outscore Maine Maritime, 49-15 in the second and third quarters.
Maine forced a season-high 29 turnovers, the fourth time this season in which it has compiled 20 or more takeaways. The defensive effort, which featured a season-high eight blocks and 12 steals, led to a 36-13 advantage in points off turnovers.
The Black Bears, who shot 56.3-percent in the first half and 64.7-percent in the third period, turned in their second-best percentage of the year (54.8). UMaine turned in its best effort from 3-point range of the season (48.5), registering its highest percentage from outside since Dec. 17, 2016 (54.5).
The offense was there from the start for the Black Bears who raced out to an 8-0 lead over the opening 1:45. The lead reached double-digits on Millan's 3-pointer with 4:23 left in the first quarter.
With the lead extended to 16, Brosseau's 3-pointer helped Maine close the half with a 13-4 run, stretch the lead out to 48-23 at the half.
Maine took its largest lead of the game late in the third quarter. Leading by 30, a trio of 3-pointers from Millan and Brosseau came as part of a 20-0 run, swelling the Black Bears' lead out to 73-23.
The Mariners did not go quiet, outscoring Maine 20-14 over the final 10-minutes. However, the Black Bears were able to cruise, wrapping up an 89-49 victory to move to 4-1 at home.
UMaine is back in action on Saturday, Dec. 9 when it travels to take on Dartmouth at noon.
