Orono, Maine --
Aaron Calixte led the way with a game-high 22 points but Boston University used a late first half run to distance itself, ultimately taking the 78-69 victory over the Black Bears on Wednesday afternoon.
Calixte was joined in double-figures by
Andrew Fleming, who was able to record his fourth career double-double after recording 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Trae Bryant who finished with a career-high 11.
The Black Bears (0-5) led by as many as seven in the opening half. However, the Terriers (1-3) would close the half on a 19-2 run, including 15 unanswered, to take a 41-28 lead into the break.
"It's a really disappointing result," said head coach
Bob Walsh. "We came out and controlled the edge of the game for the first 10-12 minutes and I felt we were really comfortable defending."
Three-point shooting from the Terriers, who were selected second in the Patriot League preseason poll, seemed to be the difference in the opening 20-minutes as the visitors shot 8-for-11 (72.7%) from downtown in the first half.
The Black Bears held strong and were impressive with their ball security early, turning it over just twice in the opening 17-minutes while forcing 10 mishaps. However, 13 second half turnovers made it tough for the Black Bears to close the gap.
Maine came out strong, opening with a 9-2 run after a 3-pointer from
Danny Evans just 3:36 into the first half.
The Terriers chipped the lead to one, thanks to a 10-4 sprint before taking their first lead of the game on Will Goff's 3-pointer with 9:20 left in the half.
Five-straight points from Bryant gave the Black Bears a two-point cushion before Calixte worked his way inside for a bucket, giving Maine a 26-22 advantage.
With 3:35 to play in the opening half, and Maine leading 28-26, Boston University reeled off 15 unanswered points off four Maine turnovers to carry a 41-28 lead into the break.
The Terriers stayed hot to start the second half, taking their largest lead of the game (16) at 46-30 with 17:30 to play.
Four-points from Bryant came as part of a 7-0 Maine run as the Black Bears began to chip away, cutting the lead to nine with 15:00 on the clock.
The Boston University lead swelled back to 16 with 3:18 to play but the Black Bears would show no quit. A 3-pointer from Calixte start a 17-6 Maine run, as the Black Bears found themselves down just 71-66 with 56-seconds on the clock.
However, the Black Bears were unable to shrink the lead under five as Boston University escaped with a 78-69 victory.
Maine is back in action on Sunday, Nov. 26 when it travels to take on Quinnipiac at 2:00 p.m.
