Binghamton slips past Maine in Women's Basketball action

Koizar leads Maine with 14 points

VESTAL, N.Y. -- In a game which featured 17 lead changes and 14 ties, the University of Maine women's basketball team (11-12, 4-4 America East) was defeated at Binghamton (10-11, 5-3 AE) by a score of 58-52 on Saturday afternoon.

Maine, which led by two after three quarters of play, was outscored 18-10 in the final quarter. Sigi Koizar led the Black Bears with 14 points while Blanca Millan tallied double-digits for her fourth-straight game, finishing with 12 points, five rebounds and four steals.

The Black Bears went 18-for-49 (36.7%) from the floor, hitting 5-of-13 attempts from downtown. Maine won the battle on the boards, 37-33, but surrendered 19 turnovers as Binghamton took advantage with a 21-5 edge in points off turnovers.

Binghamton's victory snapped Maine's eight game win streak against the Bearcats.

Both offensive games on each side of the ball were slow to develop as Maine carried a 10-9 lead after one.

The Bearcats began the second quarter with a 7-0 run to take, what would prove to be, the largest lead of the game, 16-10.

Trailing by five, Maine was able to piece together an 8-2 run to put it back on top by one with 1:34 left in the half. After a Binghamton bucket, Tanesha Sutton's offensive rebound putback at the buzzer sent Maine into the half with a 25-24 lead.

Out of the break, Millan began the half with a 3-pointer, giving Maine its largest lead of the game at 28-24.

Binghamton fought back, forcing the game's sixth tie and soon after taking a one point lead on a pair of free throws by Imani Watkins.

Back and forth action was featured throughout the remainder of the quarter before Koizar's 3-pointer at the buzzer gave Maine a 42-40 lead after three quarters.

It was again Koizar with a big shot as her layup with 4:12 to play broke the game's 13th tie, putting Maine back up by a pair.

However, Maine was outscored 10-2 down the stretch as Binghamton escaped with a 58-52 victory.

The Black Bears are back in action at home when they host Vermont on Wednesday, Feb. 1 at 7 p.m. For tickets, please visit TicketMaster.com or the Cross Insurance Center box office.
