
Baseball Splits Saturday Doubleheader against UMBC

ORONO, Maine -- Maine Baseball split Saturday's doubleheader against UMBC at Mahaney Diamond. In game one, the Black Bears defeated UMBC 6-3. In game two Maine fell to the Retrievers, 3-1.
Maine earned their first America East win this season with the game one victory.
In game one, Logan Fullmer pitched a complete game earning his second win of the season. He finished the game with four strikeouts.
UMBC struck first with one run in the top of the second after AJ wright was caught stealing and Andrew Casali was able to reach home before Maine recorded the out. UMBC took a 1-0 lead.
Brett Chappell in the bottom of the second singled to left field tying the game at 1-1. Jake Osborne later singled up the middle driving in two runs and Maine took the lead, 3-1. The next batter, Danny Casals singled to left field scoring one run and increasing the margin, 4-1. Colin Ridley singled to right field scoring Maine's fifth run of the inning and taking a 5-1 lead.
In the bottom of the third on an attempted steal, Jake Osborne was caught in a run down, Tyler Schwanz was able to score before UMBC recorded the out to give Maine a 6-1 advantage.
UMBC scored two more in the top of the seventh. Mitchell Carroll singled to right center driving in one run and bringing the score to 6-2. Kevin Lachance tripled down the right field line scoring Carroll and cutting into Maine's lead, 6-3.
Logan Fullmer shutout the Retrievers in the final two innings to preserve the victory.

Game two feature a seven inning affair, John Arel received the start against UMBC.
Through three innings of play each team was held scoreless by Arel and UMBC starter Conrad Wozniak.
In the bottom of the fourth, Brett Chappell hit his third home run of the season giving Maine a 1-0 lead.
Arel kept the Retrievers scoreless through six innings and into the seventh, recorded the first out after a foul pop-up to first. UMBC's Connor Hax homered to right field driving in three runs and giving the Retrievers a late, 3-1 lead.
The Black Bears were shut down in order in the bottom of the seventh and UMBC held on for the win.
The rubber game of the series begins at 1:00 p.m. Sunday at Mahaney Diamond. Kids 17 and under receive free admission and adult tickets are $6.
